The Haiku Thread

The rules are flexible, just in case there's any confusion. You are allowed one extra syllable, in which case it's ji-amari (字余り)

I'm a traditionalist and do my Haiku straight into Japanese, and try to use season words, which is hard when you're completely ignorant of nature....translations don't follow the 5-7-5 pattern because I'm lazy :p

クモの巣や
銀に光って
チョウを待つ

kumo no su ya
gin ni hikatte
chou wo matsu

A spider's web
gleaming silver
waiting for a butterfly

庭園に
桜が咲いて
急に雪

tei-en ni
sakura ga saite
kyuu ni yuki

In the garden
cherry blossoms are blooming
suddenly, snow

I used to have more but I lost my collection. Those are the only two I remember.

Had an argument
with guy on other forum
who said that haiku

was not real haiku
if it didn't have to do
with nature/outdoors

I told this butthead
if he ever wanted to
step outside, I'd be

all haiku up in
his ignorant pedantic
forum haiku face!

その曲や
大阪の夜
思い出させ
(字余り)

sono kyoku ya
Osaka no yoru
omoi dasase
(ji-amari)

That tune
reminds me of
nights in Osaka
(1 syllable over)
