I played a duo dinner-music gig with a guitarist friend last night. I had planned on just using a microphone - my ATM 350, but when I plugged it into my amp I got a squeeling feedback. Haven't had that problem at home but the 'GIG' seems to always present new challenges.
Fortunately, I had brought along a backup pickup - The Headway BAND. I ran that into my Headway EDB-2 which was set almost flat. In the past I have had to boost the bass, but since I learned to position the pickup with the writing on the 'label' NOT in the center of the bass but just over the E bridge foot I get a much fuller and more balanced tone.
I have included a clip with the BAND > EDB-2 > 'Y' splitter with one side to my GB Shuttle 3.0 8T and the other side direct to my Zoom H6. On the clip your hearing 95% The BAND and maybe 5% acoustic and/or amp.
To me, this sounds pretty close to the actual acoustic sound of my bass. It doesn't make it sound like the strings are big rubber bands - a sound I often hear with other piezzo pickups.
I'm very much looking forward to my turn with the Ischell contact mic when it comes my way. If it provides an even more 'life-like' sound than this I will be impressed, (and very pleased).
And my new disclaimer: 'If I hadn't quit playing for 30 years, OR if I bothered to practice I'm sure my playing would improve. It's just so much easier and more fun to obsess about gear to get 'the sound'.
