The Hello Kitty Bass Project

When this SBMM Ray34 popped up at my local shop, under 8 lbs., and with the factory cheese “metal” tuners already replaced with Hipshot USA ultralight tuners, I knew it was destined to become my new Hello Kitty bass.

It played and sounded pretty good in the shop, but as I expected, it needed some minor tweaks to make it solid…

I took the neck off to check the pocket, which was clean…tightened the spoke wheel adjuster, which was loose…dab of thread locker and tightened the Phillips screw. One of the screws attaching the neck to the body was stripped, so I cut a small piece of dowel and added some wood glue to solve that issue. Cleaned and oiled the rosewood fretboard and ran a quick synthetic 0000 steel wool pad down the back of the very nice roasted maple neck. Standard truss rod/saddle adjustments, Dunlop StrapLoks, and new DR Hi-Beams tuned and intonated:

And here it is in action, this morning…in church, no less…

OK, so disclaimer…the wig, glasses, and bass kitty shirt (thanks for the inspiration, @LowEndLobster) were a joke for rehearsal to make my fellow band members laugh…my head is completely shaved bald…but I totally rocked the Hello Kitty bass for the actual services! :bassist:

I have the companion Badtz-Maru bass from the original run (currently shown in my profile pic) and I love it. I've had 2 of them; for a Bronco bass it's surprisingly good. I want that fuzz now though.
