Since it's summer, and I am fast approaching my 18th birthday, I wanted to get a summer job mostly to fund some hobbies and get some necessary gear for college. I've already put in numerous job applications, and have already been to two interviews. I'm hoping real hard to get a job at a Subway up the street, since I can walk there in no time. Any tips from the wise men (and gals, if there are any) here in TBOT would be greatly appreciated, also would love some stories of your first jobs.

Keep your PMA ( positive mental attitude ) and be flexible. If you're shooting for Subway, know your target and know it well. That means menus, options, hours, how they greet the customers as soon as they walk in the door ( even if they don't look at you . . . ) Little things to make you stand out and let them know it means something to you.

1. You should have started sooner (sorry). Many people start looking before the end of the winter.
2. You can never be too polite, or overdressed - even if it is Subway, wear a collared shirt and tie.
3. Even at that age, consider mowing lawns - you set your own hours.

The job market does suck right now.

When you go in to ask about employment, treat that like a mini job interview, so try to dress nice and keep the eye contact. Your first job will probably be low paying and some odd hours. At this point, you don't deserve more than that, so please don't act like you do. I'm not saying you are like that since I don't know anything about you, just mentioning this as I see it as a common attitude for people in your age group.

My first job was for the minimum wage in 1987, $3.35 an hour. I worked after school from 3PM-7PM Monday through Friday, then 8AM-6PM on Saturday. I washed limos, assembled lawnmowers and chainsaws, sold hot tubs and accessories, and drove my boss's father around on errands. My boss, his brother, and their father owned a few different businesses, so I worked in and around all of them.

Honestly, I don't care if I get minimum wage or not, I just want to work mostly for experience, the money is a nice bonus though. If it'll allow me to get out of my house and doing something semi-productive, then I'll do it.
