with so many good filter pramps out there, and multicoil pickups, I don't know why people are still going after a real Wal. It just seems crazy to me. But we like what we like.
THis is my Bord-wal-ish. Bordwell built with turner pickups and underhill filter pre.
The wait was still long, but much less than Wal, and communication with cliff is great. Best of all, it is totally custom and a fraction of the price. Would not hesitate to do it again. Oh, wait, I am doing it again.

I wanted a Wal for long time. I talked to another TBer who also lusted after them, and he had bought one. He said it sounded great (of course) but the ergonomics are strange enough that he couldn’t deal with it. Since a comfy feel is probably the most important factor and I can’t try one out in person that cooled my GAS off.fwiw the elapsed time between when I sent an email to Wal requesting I be added to the official Wait List, and the time Paul reached out to me to say "You're on the list now, and I can have a new instrument for you later next year" was four-and-a-half years.
I'll probably kick myself for this some day, but after several lengthy and informative email exchanges with Paul, I ultimately decided not to proceed with ordering a new Wal.

I’m on the waitlist for a Laurie Williams 5 string electric Bass made from salvaged ancient Riverwood (some is a millennia or two old!)
Mine’s gonna be 35” scale, 2 custom pickups Lollar made for me, a Delano 3 band with a passive bypass. He’s specially engineering it for piano lows and highs.
Laurie usually does super high end acoustics as well as basses or electrics on Custom. I have 2 of his electrics and an acoustic once. Just a killer builder, one of the best i’ve seen.

There are 3 options I have tried, two successfully:
String thru the headpiece and clamp down the allen screw directly onto the nylon tape winding. This should secure the winding in place and keep it from unraveling even though it may unravel beyond the clamps as seen below on a Status Graphite. There have been instances when the string isn't positioned correctly to be fully crimped by the screw and it unravels straight away, although that has been rare.
Apply super glue to the silk ends and a little on the nylon winding, let dry and install. This is what was done on the Lignum. Note that the strings are custom made and the silks are for the most part correctly sized for the scale of the instrument. You can see that some strings are clamped on the winding and others on the silks.
The third is electrical heat shrink tubing. So far I have only experimented on old strings and haven't actually tried installing it on a bass yet. I think for the low B string the tubing may make it too thick to insert through the string clamp.
This is super helpful! I was also thinking heat shrink....or just electrical tape. Good point on the low B. I have an old set of tapes here that I can try this with. I'm having good luck with flats right now on my headless, but would love to try tapes. Thanks so much!

My medium-scale McGrath Thunderhorse has arrived! It's not as fancy as some others, and since I wanted a solid white bass I couldn't avail myself of ms Madelyn's awesome artistic skill, but it's quite nice.
Little heavy for me at 9lb 3oz but I'll deal because it's so good everywhere else. Thunderous (so it's not just a clever name!) All 3 pickups can be switched from series to single-coil with the white slide switches, and it's just all passive VVVT. Cormac actually routed it out for an 18V battery box in back just in case I want to go active in the future, but I don't think it will need any help - between the series/single and the volumes, more tones on tap than you can shake a stick at.

Yea, I'mma need to see pics big dog! Currently in the process of commissioning my 2nd Serek! I just LOOOVE my Lincoln, and it needs a chambered Sacramento companion lolYeah, guess I am, too. Waiting on my second Serek Sacramento Bass. The first one - a very late 2024 (somebody missed the "Left handed" on the order form, but it all came out very right in the end) is a 30" scale, and... pretty bling-y. Daphne Blue semi-hollow body, with White Pearloid binding on the top and bottom body edges - and the F-hole. Definitely gives my big orange Gretsch Broadkaster some competition for a Rockabilly bass... The one I ordered six weeks ago? It's going to be pretty much a "plain Jane". A 32" lined fretless; Rosewood fingerboard; Dark Plum body; Chrome hardware and Lollipop Tuners; Parchment knobs and Tuner cover. It will be nice looking, but I'm more interested in how it will sound; solid Maple neck-thru body/body wings, and 2 TV Jones Thunderblade pickups. Currently? Scheduled for delivery sometime in mid-April, 2027. This time, though, Jake Serek assures me that it WILL be left-handed...

That's a FSO I could actually own, but maybe in 34" - looks great in the understated black and white theme. I recall the review on TBC sounded great.
