Remember, if you are going from taper wound (like your original set) to non-tapered, you're going to need a bridge adjustment.
I haven't tried flats on my Smith, but I can guess that without the tapers and without the regular windings, some of that signature "Smith" sound is going to be missing.
But it's all about trying to get that sound that you hear in your head; so go for it and let us know how it turns out.
I don’t use taper rounds on my Smith. I picked up the 1984 bass just now - I was so keen to try it I took it straight into a pub, found a sofa and re-strung it there and then! Can’t wait to get it home and to try it properly. I love the satin finish on the bass though, and the neck is beautiful. I’ll post a NDB when I take some pics of my own.
