not really, there's plenty of people who are willing to make anything you want, even if it is to have a lefty body, and reversed nut/bridge, but naturally a lot more $$$$. and it would be tough to sell off a lefty bass with the strings inverted, since that isn't too common for even lefty players.

p.s. I love your pic of the 2 lefty players in the band --awesome. I played with leftys before, but not in a "real" band thing..GREAT PIC! ( regardless of the ERA ) :D

Read through this thread. There are a lot of companies that charge minimal or no upcharge for lefty versions of their basses. I guess I should have been more clear that I meant "lefty version" when I said "custom".

I still stick with my original post, for me playing with the strings inverted yes, it would be easy finding a place that would take a brand new lefty bass, and pull the nut out, file a new one, and change the saddles in the bridge, THEN re-set it up all over for more $$$$. Not something I could just walk out of GuitarCenter with, unless I paid to have it "customized" and it would be a LOT harder to sell it off to a lefty, since now the strings are on upside down, that was really my point of the OP.

Lefty guitarists and bassists are very common now-a-days, but upside down players are still RARE. :D A short story - Yingwie is one of many great players, but MAN KIDAL is a 100% Yingwie clone, dresses, plays, and sounds like Yingwie BUT plays his righty strat upsidedown ( MY HERO ), and if you weren't watching, you would never know - a short one of many youtube vids of KIDAL:

p.s. besides WHO said playing with the E string on top is "correct" anyway??? If the inventors 500 years ago had strung up bodies with the E on the bottom, like a standard piano low notes on the bottom to high notes on top, all you players would be playing upside down, and it would be considered normal. -- remember the Europeans and Canadians use cars and roads that are totally backwards to us Americans, BUT it is as normal to them as our cars and roads are to us.

I don't know much about different types of basses (unlike guitars).

My main bass is a G&L p-bass clone. I want to retain the p-bass configuration, but I want a smaller jazz neck. Who makes such a beast as a lefty? Perhaps P+J pickups would be best. Hopefully something that is not hard to find used (like a Fender Deluxe or G&L SB2)

Hello, can I join?!?!

I'm totally lefthanded, tried with righty guitars, but they only worker for me when they were upside down. Probably started out as lefty air-guitar player when I was young, and never seemed to (be willing to) change this when I bought my first guitar.

Too bad it's not easy for lefty bass players to compare different guitars in one shop. What do you guys think?

I have a lefty SB2. It pulls off a great P vibe. I think www.basscentral.com might have one. I do see them on ebay from time to time. You can also try to find a G&L L2000 with a jazz neck, but those are rare.

I play upside down, so for me, any righthander's bass works ( and there's NEVER a shortage of those things around, regardless of the company who makes it ) You are right FINDING 3-4 of the SAME model lefty guitar to compare to another CAN BE DIFFICULT in the same shop. The typical answer from the salesperson " We have 18 Fender's, 14 Lakeland's 16 Sedowskys, 12 Yamahas, and 9 Dean's here sir, but only 1 lefty version of that Ibanez bass you seem to like"... :D

Haha, very very true!

I play the right handed models upside down (many salesperson gave me a strange look lol). This way I can get a feel of the different models. But the quality of the left handed bass that I'm gonna get cannot be assured. As from what I experienced, I need to pay a deposit before they will help me get the model that I want. =(

Btw, let me join this club!!

count me into da club! I've been having a real hard time finding the instruments I want being a lefty... I finally ended up with going custom for my guitar.
I was in a shop the other day which I never been to before, and for the first time in my life, I see a left handed 5 string bass!!! I just had to pick it up, it was a ****** 500$ yamaha, but it felt so great finally holding one. too bad they actually hadn't opened up for the day yet, and I just luckily got in because I drove there and met one of the employees who let me in, so I couldn't really try it in an amp...
