I don't love all basses, but I don't really hate any basses either. Here is one area where I think people are split. Some people seem bent on having every bass tone that has ever been recorded in one bass. I'm not necessarily talking about the Variax, or modelling in general. I'm more talking about the "it can go from a P-bass to a 'Ray with the flick of a switch and couple EQ adjustments" type basses. I understand the draw with these, but I have found that many (not all) of these basses tend to have a very generic, bland tone. Some might see it as a blank audio canvas waiting to be EQd, sculpted, and effected every which way from Sunday...a one size fits all instrument.
But, I prefer basses that have a distinct identity and don't apologize for doing what they do. I'm talking Fender, EBMM, Spector, Warwick, MTD, Sadowsky, etc. You know what these are and you either love em or hate em, but they have a strong voice. Some of them are still versatile, but only because their distinct voice happens to work in a number of situations instead having to be manipulated to work in that situation.
But, I appreciate that others will disagree with me and thats cool. We should listen to questions people ask instead just replying with our favorite brand EVERY time someone asks, or bashing another company that we don't like for whatever reason. What is firewood to me might be tonal nirvana to someone else and that's why there are so many bass manufacterers out there right now. Its not a bad thing.
