the microSD in your phone can make a difference

I noticed something when I switched from iPhone to android. I had the same amount of music on the iPhone and it took up like 8 gb. The music came from my iTunes and went to the phone and I didn't do any kind of file converting. When I got the android I took all the music and put it in a plane old folder and loaded the music from the folder directly onto my androids SD card. The same amount of music takes up 3 gb and the sound quality is the same.

Just spit balling here but either the format or the extra stuff that sometimes come with files such as the images and etc. But again I really do not know.

I don't know either. But all the album art went on the android just fine. I went out and spent money on a large capacity SD card thinking the little bitty 16gb card I had wasn't enough. Even with that I would've had more than enough space and now I have over a hundred gb of empty space. It's just a shame I can only put music and pictures on the SD card and all that storage can't be used for apps.

Then it might have something to do how it's formatted. It's been years since I got into this (for learned it for certifications) but drives whether it's a Mac or Windows is formatted in sectors and clusters. Lets say a space for storage (a cluster not the whole drive) is formatted at 10MB's of storage space and you copy a 1MB file to it, it might design lose the 10MB's of space. But again this is a guess.

I'm always amazed at how may of us use our phones as our dedicated music player. As musicians you'd think more of us would go for a dedicated, no compromise device for music. My COWON leaves smartphones for dead in every department.
I use my iPod Touch for all my music needs. I do have a 64gb SD card in my phone though. I just never think about using my phone as a music player.

This is right off Apple's own iOS 10 page:

If your iPod Touch isn't a 6th gen., you're out of luck on iOS 10.

OMG here we go again with the quality argument. If you are listening to your music does it really matter that slight difference? Seriously?

No it doesn't matter that much, which was my point, especially on lower end hardware. The recommendation I made was for lower quality files, but still good enough, and allowing for 3-4 times more music to stored in the same amount of space.

Hey question..I have one too and gave it to my fiance for a dedicated player due to issues with her IPhone. I notice it will not go past ver 9 on the OS. Do you find that to be the same?
Yes, with the version I have. I've also had to delete a few apps as they require the newer OS in order to update. It's all good. I barely used those apps anyway. I basically use it to Facetime/Text friends and play music. If you want the updated OS, you'll have to buy the latest version iPod Touch. I probably will buy a new one down the road but I can't right now as I'm currently jobless.

IMHO and this is only if you have an IPhone; just get a large storage IPhone for you will save money in the end and only need to carry one device.

especially if your using lower end earphones
I don't.
My ripped files are also used on my PC that has Genelec monitors attached to it. With a 64gb SD I haven't had any problems with space for the FLACs and I don't want to rip them twice.
On my car stereo I can't hear a difference between a 320 MP3 and an FLAC, but I can definitely hear the lower quality of Spotify streaming. On my IEMs, headphones, and monitors I can hear the difference. I prefer it and it isn't causing a problem.

Apple phones do music well and my new Samsung phone is just as good. What compromise? The ability to play any of my thousands of songs at any moment is a bonus of the 5 inch super computer I keep in my pocket. I see nothing that would be gained by having a music player that did nothing but play music.
Admittedly Apple phones aren't too bad as music players, as long as you get along with iTunes... Which I don't. All the android phones I've tried have a really weak output, to the point where I bought a mini headphone amp to boost the signal to what you get from an Apple or from a dedicated music player. Then I had to try out 57 different music player apps until I found one with suitable eq control, only to find I had the phones I built compression to deal with, wreaking havoc on my desired eq changes. I haven't tried the new Samsung though......

Then I bought the COWON. Plenty of power, more storage space, magnificent sound out of the box and excellent eq built in to make it even better. Longer battery life, and it means my phone battery lasts longer. All this in a package about the size of a Bic lighter, much smaller than my phone.

I do believe music sounded bettrr out of headphones on the iPhone than on my galaxy s7. But the difference is negligible and I don't listen through headphones much anyway.
