Ordered my first Lull last week. It is a PJ4 with a J neck. I got it passive with volume, volume, tone. They steered me toward the ash, and I've always been a rosewood guy mainly for aesthetics. Maybe it's just the guys dominating this thread, but I don't see much love for the ash\rosewood combination. I've been in the camp that fingerboard material didn't make a huge difference anyway. Thoughts on this combo??

I have an ash/rosewood Nordy VP5 and it sounds fantastic.

I played an Ash/Rose Lull PJ5 last week and thought it sounded great.Of course it depends what you are after,but it was very clear and responsive.Me personally,I found myself dialing in some low mids on the amp as I like a bit more thump.My current main bass is alder/maple Jazz and Im very happy with that combo.But Ive recently become a huge fan of the PJ's.Ive played a few lately and Im wondering why I didnt try it sooner.

Boy you guys are talkin' to me. I just finished my second gig with my new M4V and I can't say enough good things about my Lull experience.

I'm a passive P-bass guy from way back. Took a huge leap of faith with a jazz style/active(oh the humanity!) With rounds! (What have I become!).

My M is Alder/rose and it's perfect. My next Lull (best laid plans) will be a P5 Alder/Maple. Mainly because I'm a sucker for black and tort with a maple board. Never entertained the option of painting over Ash. Seemed wrong. Now you're sharing the sonic flavors of different combinations and throwing a PJ granade into to the pile:eek:. I love this!. I do know that I want a maple board and I want to retain the P thump w/ a low mid vibe. So maybe Alder is still the way for me to go. If I'm computing all this correctly:) Now to determine if I want that skinny pup in the back;). Does anyone know if Mike will do a 34" P5/PJ5?. Thanks folks. This is the best on-going club on this site. IMHO of coarse.

Yes-and at this point it could be splitting hairs a bit.But When I played the Ash/Rosewood PJ5 the other day I walked away with these thoughts.I loved it best with both the P and J wide open.When I solo'ed the P I prefered a bump in the lower mids.Bringing back some of the J added a nice punch.Here is the thing-we pretty much all the time us an in-ear system and I dont take an amp so my EQ is limited.Up to this point I have an onboard pre on all of my basses so its not been a problem.I started on a quest for a passive P and am now looking into the PJ's.I really dont thing Id be disappointed either way but I think the tone characteristic is more to my taste.

I love maple boards also and Im looking into an alder/maple PJ5 at the moment.I had not even thought of doing a PJ until I was all over youtube and listened to clips and fell in love.And I know thew will do a 34in on their Jazz basses so I assume they do it on the P as well.

I heard about that-I would offer this though.I played that PJ5 again at the local shop and Ill say that the playability was awesome and the B string sounded awesome.I didnt find the 35in scale to be an issue on this one.

Not old news, but IMO they're not yet fully baked. The one I played was disappointingly soft down low...B and E string, for that matter. And it was an ash/maple bass. Definitely an interesting concept, and ideal for folks who absolutely must have a 34" scale, but I'd suggest there's more work to be done.
