The Mike Lull Club Part 4

Hi Lullers,

Has anyone ever swapped out 4 knob Bartolini NTMB preamp out of their M5V? I have one with stock SD pickups and while I have no issues with Bart pre itself I miss the passive tone control badly...

I have been skimming through the market landscape and it seems that both Nordstrand and Sadowsky are an option (while Nordy can be configured for 3 band AND passive tone within 4 knob layout).

Would love to hear any experiences/recommendations on the pairing with stock Seymours that Mike has? Feeling a little lost here

:help:

Hi I gone the opposite route several times in Lulls "Nordstrand pickups -> Bart Pre"

Just for the record I think you there is a Bart pre that offers a passive roll off with a multi band pre. You might want to look into that.

I forget, is that the stock preamp in M5V's? If so, have you tried pulling the volume knob? In my M5V, pulling the volume know sets it into passive mode.

There is no need to swap the preamp out in order to get a passive tone control.

I posted a while back about having a passive tone control added to my stock M5V by Mike at his shop. I believe it is added in the circuit before the preamp.
Call the Lull shop to discuss this mod - it can be done without the need to send the entire bass - you'd just send them the control plate.
BTW - the passive tone control they added works in both active and passive modes. The mid-frequency selector was retained by adding a small mini-switch to control plate.

Thanks for the advice guys!

@TonyP- I actually thought of you but reckoned that you are pretty much always going full Nordy (PUs and pre)? Interesting to hear you kept Bart pre in some instances.

@GeeBass @Fred312b Adding mid switch and passive tone on top of stack mid-knob sounds like a clean (at least economically clean:)) solution!

Now onto thread archeology to find your posts GeeBass!

Just took delivery of my new custom PJ4. EMG GZR Geezer Butler pups, glow-in-the-dark fret marker dots in the black neck binding, and autographed on the back of the headstock by Mike, himself. Thanks, Mike, Paul, and all the crew!

Please excise the unpolished control plate :rollno:

I'm guessing I'm at least the 3rd owner, but it came from the shop this way
