The Mike Lull Club Part 4

Yeah. I went over the Bass Shop in W. Seattle to look at it because my wife was away and I thought: "It can't hurt to look at it" then "It can't hurt to plug it in".

I later stopped by his shop and told Mike I bought it. He said he built a black one that was very similar at the same time (just in the last couple months), and I want to say he said he'd built one more.

Proud to be the new owner of Mike Lull #1232, a black/tort 2008 PJ4, purchased a few days ago from the original owner on Craigslist. I'm tremendously impressed with this instrument!

Interested if anyone is using either of the nano heads (TE Elf, tC BAM) or headphone amp (like Phil Jones Big Head) for prax only. Also considering GK Plex preamp pedal.

I'm relegated to headphone prax to maintain marital bliss, would like something to just stay in prax room and be always available. A backup big head seems overkill.

Thoughts on any of these?

Will be asking in a couple of my clubs, so apologies for cross-posting for some of you.

I have a TC Elf and it works fine, both as a head and as a headphone amp.
If you ONLY need the headphone amp portion, you might look into a Backbeat instead.
The headphone amp is very good, and the fact that you can feel the bass in your body is fantastic, whether playing with headphones only or even rehearsing or gigging.

I dabbled with headphone amps back in the day, but these days I only use a laptop. So much more versatile to play along with YouTube/GoogleMusic, use Slow Downer for key change, record, play along with Scott :), have my music/notes right there. Plus you can get some cool plug-ins and effects if you like...I have the SVT software, e.g.

I can't tell any quality difference between a good heaphone amp and a laptop + Focusrite. Out of curiosity, what's the use case for a standalone headphone amp these days?

Hi Have you checked out the Cafe Walter?
I use that all the time with Audio-Technica ATH-M50 (the headphones themselves make a substantional difference).

I have gone to engineers and out those cans on their head and said "please make me sounds like this as much as possible"

What do we have to do to convince him (Walter) to start building new ones? His latest FB post he's promoting the PJB one, which either means he's designing it for them, or he's not seeing the need (the "market") anymore.

fwiw -- I'm using the headphone jack on a Darkglass Alpha-Omega Ultra now.

He told me he was interested in doing an updated version, but who knows. I would love it if he did.

OK So Here is the deal...Mike is not sure that the roasted necks are a stable as the claims are.
So...I'm his test pilot, since I travel a bit and I'm in climate where the temp can swing 30 degrees in a day and we have all 4 seasons in Boston.
Guthrie Govan told me His Roasted necks are super stable and I believe him.

My build

Ash Body - Transparent Orange
Roasted Maple neck and Roasted Fretboard
Gloss finish on the neck and board
Vintage frets (small)
Nordstrand Big Singles
Bart Pre (with the 3 band switchable mids)
Pan Pot disabled and the pickups wired in series
GHS progressive strings 40-126

FWIW, this roasted neck hasn't moved a bit in the 10 years I've had it.
