The Most Bizarre Thing

I thought the same at first, but it isn't really a "dead spot" but a "dead note". By tuning the string up and down and finding that the D is still dead on the G string, he proved that it was a problem with resonance, not fretting.
for it to move 1/2 step the whole neck would have to change , retuning one string should not cause a 1/2 tone change of enough tension change to do that IMO but hey what do I know. Bet ya $5 its the string LOL !
 
I have, over the years, purchased a couple of dud packs where one or even several strings were DOA. It's not an all the time thing, but it does happen. With even the "best" manufacturers.
I just got a set with dead G string right out of the box, NEVER had that happen before , I could easily see a dead NOTE on a string , bad winding , flat spot , bad wire itself etc.

Machines are made by humans, and therefore, are prone to all the trappings of our peanut brains. Haha. However, that sounds truly abhorrent. That sounds like an old busted string was jammed in a new pack..
 
Let me guess: jazz bass, right? Almost every jazz bass I’ve played or owned has had a faster decaying note right at that location. It seems to be inherent to the jazz bass design, and many (not all) seem to suffer from it to varying degrees. It’s the very first thing I look for when playing a jazz bass off the rack at a music store. As others have mentioned, flats do seem to make the problem more noticeable. Still, I love jazz basses, so unless the note dies faster than an anvil falling on a road runner, it’s all good. :thumbsup:
I don't know, I have several "Jazz" basses (though not Fender), and none of them have that dead spot. I'm aware of the phenomenon, seems fairly common, but I've been fortunate not to have encountered it.
 
most times I have run into this it is fret related , and it can change with types of strings, this seems to be a string issue but WTHDIK

I had to FIX my SRMS805 , it had a bad/high fret around the 7th fret only on the G string , a slight filing in that spot fixed it only removed a very small amount to get there. I tried to hammer it down with no luck. This is a brand new bass BTW

Exactly the same here. Aware of it due to it being common. Always on the look out for it. My Squiers don't have it through to my #1. It kinda makes me paranoid. Hah.
 
Your bass has a dead spot - right where they always are. That dead spot steals the fundamental of a note played there fast. If you put rounds, on your bass, the overtones hang around for a while so it isn't as "dead". With flats, the string itself kills the overtones, the neck steals the fundamental, and...it's a much more obvious dead spot.

The cure is often to add (or subtract) mass from your headstock - your bass neck is what we Acoustical Physicists call a mass loaded bar - changing the mass loading will change the frequency at which the neck vibrates, and move the antinode to a place where you're not playing that note - kinda difficult to explain completely. If you take half the tuners off your bass (the E and A ones, leave the G string and its tuner on), and the dead spot is alleviated, then a set of lighter tuners (Hipshot Ultralites) is the real cure.
That is interesting. I should experiment with that, too. Removing the tuners. I also read that Fender tuners are usually smaller in diameter than the holes in the headstock. Some have solved putting tuners that match in diameter the holes. Thank you for the advice.

Wait as you change tuning the dead spot moves ?? sounds like a bad string , If it is a dead spot on the neck it should stay put IMO ?? makes no sense even with a MASS argument. I could be wrong but ?? look for any defects/crimps/junk in that area of the string.
Yes, the dead spot follows the D note on the G string. If I tune the G down to F# or up to G# the dead spot follows accordingly to wherever the D note is place on the fretboard.

No, the dead spot moves if you change the tuning, because it's related to the resonant frequency of the neck. The neck resonates and absorbs the energy from the string at the fundamental frequency of the note, so that frequency "dies" very quickly. It's more noticeable with flats than rounds (usually) because rounds, especially new ones, have a lot more higher overtone frequencies that fill in the note even when the fundamental dies.
That's exactly what I am experiencing.

I tried raising the 7th fret by placing the saddle allen wrench on top of it so the strings makes contact with it and it's much higher then the subsequent frets. The problem is still there, and, again, it happens only with the note D. I am sure it's not a matter of bad frets. Also, changing the strings didn't help. As many have pointed out, the flat wounds accentuate the issue.

Squier Jaguar. I put the round wounds back because with the flat wounds the sound really died faster than the anvil falling on the road runner, lol.
 
somebody send me a link to this resonance issue , I gotta take a look at it , I've been playing my whole life and never ran into this issue , it was always something else , sounds like a theory to me.
Like a scientific paper or ??
I repeated the test with the round wound G. The dead note moves with the tuning. So it can't be a bad strings. Also, I raised the saddle as high as I could and the problem still follows the tuning. If it were a bad fret, the issue would stay on the 7th fret and not move to the 6th or the 8th according to the tuning.
