What tune has the most mournful melody? Here's my submission (meaning the melody in the guitar line, not the voice, though that's up there, too).

    I'll just leave this here.

Though the Smiths have plenty of other candidates, too. "Meat is Murder" is pretty bleak as well.

Sounds like standard doo-wop to me, melody wise (didn't listen to the lyrics, they did seem pretty dark though, sure). But could be a love song with different lyrics...

I've been listening to that tune and loving it for over 50 years now, and still haven't a !$#%ing clue what it's supposed to be about... :D

Really enjoyed the series, too... the song fits it, perfect... especially the haunting harmonica, throughout.

Just the mention of "Nocturne" makes me think of Chopin and that wonderful Val Kilmer Doc Holliday scene from Tombstone. (Actually, there's another few that are even darker, I'll try to dig out.)

I’ve always found Roger Sessions’ Symphony #4 to be mournful.

    Seriously? REALLY???

Samuel Barber's "Adagio for Strings," played at JFK's funeral - it isn't even close to anything else in sadness; it's not even in Dm.

    BTW, it is breathtakingly beautiful
