The most mournful melody?



Beat me to it - first thing I thought of. I love the entire opera - bonus that it is in English.

My 2nd would be Beethoven Piano Sonata No. 7 (Op 10 No 3), movement 2. Not exactly a mournful melody (Beethoven was not known for his melodies), but the entire piece is an expression of deep emotion along those lines.

The entire sonata (4 movements) is worth an in-depth listen. It is really an overlooked enigmatic masterpiece. Skip to 5:20 for mvmt 2, or better yet, listen to it all the way through.
