The music must match the wine (rant)

How about "Legs" by ZZ Top? Play that with a nice red. (legs is a wine term referring to the trails the wine leaves in the glass when you tilt the glass back and forth...)

Actually, I'd just play a whole set of ZZ Top... Pearl Necklace, Sharp Dressed Man, etc - plenty of stuff around the room to match.

End the night with SRV's Life By The Drop. (or swap lyrics to "Jump, Jive, and Wail" to "Drunk Drive and Wail"...)

Great opportunity for humor.

But think of it as no different from any gig where the host wants the music to suit the occasion. She had a pretentious way of putting it but it comes to the same thing. Ask her if she has specific tunes in mind. It could make your life easier (well, maybe).

Remember Paul Desmond's quip about his music being the sound a dry martini?

Besides, how different is it from the bass player who has 6 basses for different kinds of music and fusses that the strings on his jazz bass don't have the right sound for his blues gig?

This actually reminds me of a "gig" we were supposed to do with the cover band I was in years ago. This girl was a friend of the band...basically she would hang out occasionally while we practiced, and did pictures for us sometimes at gigs (she was trying to start a photography business), which we could use on the band website. So far so good.

Anyway, she booked this place about 45 minutes away for her birthday, and we agreed to play the event (I'm pretty sure for free, don't remember exactly). This was all well and fine, until she sent us the "itinerary" for the evening.

She wanted us to show up four hours before the gig, I think around 3 PM, and stay until midnight. She also wanted us to learn a bunch of songs we didn't know, including one by Concrete Blonde (funny, that band has a female lead singer, and we had a MALE lead singer). She also wanted us to take lengthy breaks between sets, provide dance music on CD in between sets through our singer's PA, and then do a "finale" song at midnight to end the "gig".

Our singer sent her an email basically telling her she wasn't our manager and we weren't going to be dictated to like that. Also that we weren't going to do the show. Probably for the best.
