The Mustang Sallly threads to end all Mustang Sally threads!

Dude, if you were at one of my shows, why didn't you stop up and say 'hi'? I would've bought you a drink.

LOL...Jive1 you are just too funny man. :D It just makes me laugh when I hear poorly rehearsed musos crying about playing empty bars, lousy pay and then wondering why they don't get invited back.

To me, song selection is only as good as song execution. If the tunes are being butchered one right after the other, then it just doesn't matter what is or is not on the list or whether or or not you take requests.

How many of you can play and sing lead vocals on Mustang Sally? Just asking because I tried singing with it today and was tripping over the combination of bass line and vocals :hmm:

Sure can....

I've done it enough I could probably take a nap, read the newspaper, have a cup of coffee & a smoke and shave my beard while doing that song.

Yes, can do.

As with any bass line that goes beyond thumping out quarter or eighth note roots, the lines have to be second nature, mechanical, you can't be thinking about it. That mental energy should be reserved for and spent on a good vocal performance.

Play the line for a good long time while letting your mind drift until muscle memory takes over. Then gradually start trying to sing it.

God almighty, am I really coaching another bass player on how to play and sing "Mustang Sally"? Sorry about that folks.

j/k STB, good luck with the song, it's fun. :)

Ah yes, thank you I think I got it now after trying again this morning :) I'm still relatively new to this singing and playing lark. Playing 12 years, but only sang my first song live January this year (Foxey lady, what a rush!) Cant wait to try out MS live though! :hyper:

We know it but it is not on our set list. We play the great tune when asked.
Have you ever seen anyone not dancing to it? Yea...
they all get up and dance so it is a winner.
Just overplayed. Personally, as a bass player, love the groove I play. I make it my song and the patrons love the bass.
What's the big deal anyway? The drinkers want to hear it so give it to 'em. The song is great.

oh, and by the way, I saw this a few days ago on the streets of Brooklyn near my house, but I'm told that it's a '66 not a '65 (which of course makes all the difference):

We did the song once and our singer mistakenly said "69" instead of 65. Of course we all got a big laugh of it. Now it's become a running joke with the band and our friends so he does it every time we play it. "I bought you a vintage Mustang. I'd like to have a 69" :D
