That's a really good point, you used to have to have to work for information like that, stuff that would portray people in a different light, now it's barely even a google search away. You can't actually *be* any of those scary archetypes and be a successful businessperson/performer, and that becomes abundantly clear when you can know everything about them and see who they are(n't).
Scary music is as simple as idemntifying a common shared value the preceding generation holds.
The increasing shift in domestic demographics and to more international focus seem ripe for exploitation.
Not just scary or dangerous, but even mysterious. Having total access to bands through YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and official band websites takes a lot of the danger and mystery away from rock music.

...I know the growth of the subculture and the medium happen in symbiosis to a degree, but those bands/genres convinced people that the teens listening to them were going to turn into the things they sang about. It's been happening for so long...

What is going to scare a parent if they grew up exposed to even a little ICP or MM or NIN or GG Allin or...you get the picture.
Between that and the fact that you can surf up on uncut footage of war dead or people in the process of actually becoming war dead, it's tough to be impressed by some poser pretending they are some kind of badass.
I live in the culturally stagnant Southeastern U.S. and can attest that rock, punk, alt., etc. still scare people.![]()
On stage suicide is the next step in shock rock.
