Not that they are scary, but I listened to the Jesus Lizard for over two years before I even knew what they looked like. I think I read maybe one interview with them in a zine. I finally saw them live in the early 90s, and it was such a surprise. I was totally blown away by them partially because I didn't know what to expect. With today's technology, that kind of experience with a band will never happen to me again.

Scary is DJs being touted as musicians, Scary is banal pre-fabbed bands that have more pearly-whites poster appeal than sonic integrity, Scary is artists prostituting everything about themselves on social media (really, I don't want to know what XYZ artist had for breakfast, some things are best left to private life - oh wait, we don't have privacy anymore...), Scary is auto-tuned everything, Scary is the public eating up this morass...

As for a scary genre?

Scary is Mellowinman's Speed Mellow :p

Your'e damn straight. I agree 110%. Remember the big brouhaha over Alice Cooper and KISS back in the day?
All those things mentioned in the above post pretty much took that all away. :bawl:
At least to me, that was a big, big part of what made rock music so good, and entertaining back then. I think it's sad that this (and future) generation(s) won't ever experience rock music like I did growing up. It was awesome!

What is going to scare a parent if they grew up exposed to even a little ICP or MM or NIN or GG Allin or...you get the picture.

Between that and the fact that you can surf up on uncut footage of war dead or people in the process of actually becoming war dead, it's tough to be impressed by some poser pretending they are some kind of badass.

+1. People are so desensitized that the overly sensitive few come off as trying too hard, as do the "Shock jocks" out there nowadays.

And I feel like subcultures are starting to break down in general too. Yes, you still get the dedicated followers, but you don't have the same "Scenes" anymore, nor do you really have people willing to beat each other up over a band anymore. Most of that just happens through social media now instead.

I too live in the culturally stagnant southeast and i think it's not so much scared as it is indignant that someone would have the gall to act contrary to the time honored code of the south which dictates that all wimmenfolk be shy and retiring and all menfolk be manly and stoic. Acting any other way is either a sure sign of being in league with satan or being a yankee, which BTW is far worse than being in league with satan.

Down here it's a known fact yankees have no morals or values and have been known to eat children just for fun.

Folks down this way are seriously all about the good ole days.

The status quo in which a WASP society represented the overarching power and majority is shifting.

Take a song like "Chocolate City" and adjust for hue, production, and tone and you've touched an increasingly raw nerve for the declining white protestant male empire.
