The Northern Lights...Ever Seen Them?

I saw the White Stripes documentary, and that was pretty cool.
Note: you cannot see the Northern Lights in Detroit. Trust me...

I hate those things. You know, you're sitting there, minding your own business, and they'll come marching in, crawl up your leg, and start biting the inside of your ***. And you're like "HEY! Get outta my ***, you g***** Northern Lights!" :scowl:

It's from an episode of South Park. It's something Cartman said but I can't remember exactly what he was talking about.

I saw the Northern Lights one time. And of all places, in Orlando, Florida. It was in '89, I think, from the parking lot of my workplace in south Orlando. I didn't know what it was. The sky to the north was blazing with deep red waves going almost overhead. I thought it was some odd atmospheric effect of the city lights. Next day the Orlando Sentinel explained that it was the Northern Lights. Obviously very unusual. It was seen much further south than Orlando as well.

Anyone else seen them that far south?

Yep,see 'em all the time. The week before Christmas there was a stunning display..very red to dark red with blue on the outer edges..it was really something. Usually we see them as reddish/blue/greens or reddish/green/yellows,so the solid red display was remarkable!

Maybe once a year in Alberta, I'll see them. I would have loved to have seen them when I was up in the Arctic, but I was there during the midnight sun, so no lights for me

I'm in northern Alberta right now (Fort McMurray land of the tar sands!) and I hope I'll be able to them tonight, but they're forecasting cloudy conditions all night...

Any Brits in the North East or Scotland been lucky enough in recent days? If the weather was a bit more reliable I'd drive up. Top of my bucket list by a long, long way.
