The guys in my party band are all getting older, including me. The lead vocalist occasionally wants to take a song down a step or so. My 5-er is indispensable to retaining the character and linear integrity of the bass lines on those songs.
Yes band I had been playing with we were all 'Mature' and singer/guitarist wanted to go 1 step down on more than a few songs which caused problem you mentioned for me [4 stringer]. I suggested we SRV it and all tune to Eb as a compromise and if Singer still needed more we find another Song; they went for it
At my age now I didn't want to deal with learning new muting techniques, Adjust to size weight and feel and also adapt to string spacing differences. I just want to play; comfort and enjoyment are now at top of my list.
