The official Ampeg V-4BH thread

+1 the V4BH has a good DI out on it too, so getting a great sound to FOH is easy. Thru a NV610 or NV215 & I suppose a SVT215 or any efficient cab with plenty of cone area to move lotsa air-the V4BH will be loud enough as long as guitardists aint cranking 100w MArshalls etc....even then it'd go close IME.
Ive never had a prob. with onstage sound outta the V4BH thru a good sized cab/s

Yes-pushing air. I haven't had an issue with my 6x10. I play with 2 guitarists and everyone is mic'd through the PA (including the drummer's kick) except me. Of course you are not getting pounding lows out front, but it is loud enough to mix with the music and people are still able to have a conversation in the bar/club.

Different gear for different situations. If I was back in my youth playing with my previous former heavy band (the drummer is now the drummer of Shadows Fall) then I would need way more.

Power.

It's not like everyone is super loud, but this keeps the stage volume for the guitars is kept down. The kick is mic'd for punch. If I go through the PA, then I can't make my amp hit that sweet spot and it sucks power from the rest of the PA system. Nice and clear as is. For outdoor stuff, we will use a powered sub and then I will go through the system.

A big selling point (and return gig) for my band is playing at a level that emphasizes live music, but let's the audience talk (and order drinks).

If I was playing through a monster system, then I might just use my Hartke Kickback 10 as I could angle it to hear myself and the rest would come from the system.

I posted this in the amps section too, so please bear with me.

This looks like the place for this particular question:

I've had my Ampeg V4B since 1978 (my God is that 30 years?) and it was 2nd hand when I got it.

It hums like an old GE fridge though.

What causes that?

Also, it hasn;t moved in nearly 20 years due to weight, but this is mostly because my cabs are one 2x12 Fender and one 2x12 Ampeg.

Is there a good contemporary one speaker cabinet with a 10 or 12-inch speaker that I coould get to use with this head?

I'm missing something why does that prevent you from moving the V4B?

I've used mine with a Carvin 1503 3 way cabinet with excellent results.

The V4B is just heavy Pedro, plus I have to carry it out of my basement with a large cabinet and my little Roland Cube 60 has served me well everywhere from kitchen parties to large clubs since 1987.

The older you get the lazier (or smarter) you get.

Besides, it hums.

nubs you in Milwaukee? Ever play over here in Madison? Would love to come hear you guys sometime.

I am actually located in the southern fox valley area, Waupun. My band is based out of Milwaukee, i jam with Joey Lavie from Bad Boy whose from Franklin actually and our Drummer is located in Racine.
