I went to the lakefront steps twice this week and did them two at a time- the way up the first time was easy, on the way down, the O2 deficit caught up and I was breathing heavy by the time I got to the bottom for lap 2. About 3/4 of the way up the second time, I was sucking air and by the time I got back to the bottom, I was gassed. I then walked to the corner about 1/4 mile away, walked up the hill (another 1/4 mile), over to the top of the steps (another 1/4 mile) and down, for another two laps, one step at a time, before I left. Seventy steps up, about 6" rise for each and at about a 45 degree slope. At 285#, it's a great workout. I just know some little pipsqueak will pass me on the way up and kick sand in my face while I'm gasping for breath.

Just checking in to say that both I and my middle son went to an indoor rock climbing gym last night.

First time in many moons that I've been in a gym (we just did some light barbell/kettelbell work to get back into the swing of things).

Of course after seeing the climbing walls and the "cave" now we are both are interested in learning to climb.

We will get our Belay training next week and then we'll be hitting the walls.

Hopefully it will be a good way for us to get into shape and spend some father/son time together. I'm really looking forward to it. :)

I'm pretty basic the only supplement I take is protein powder (described previously), and a multivitamin (grocery store brand) when I remember, which is approximately once per week.

Per our previous discussion, I trimmed my protein intake (in the shake) to 1/2 cup of protein powder, and will test this for approximately a month to see the effects.

You can usually do bouldering without having any training (don't need to belay). Great for working the upper body, particularly your forearms!

After trying out the walls, and getting our belay training, all I can say about climbing is "we're hooked"! :hyper:

Both my younger sons loved it, as did I, and even though I am (cough cough) significantly heavier than either of them they had no trouble safely belaying and lowering me after my climbs.

So yeah, we officially joined our local rock climbing gym under the family membership. Going again tomorrow evening and I can't wait.

Now of course we are shopping around for our own climbing shoes, harnesses, and chalk bags, but relatively speaking it's actually not a terribly expensive sport to get into. Each of us can get fully fitted out with essentially top of the line equipment for less than $300 per person, (cheaper than a MIM Fender)!

Generally my two sons will climb/belay as a team, and I can hit the weights, power rack, and treadmill more, but we will mix and match on days when we all don't hit the gym at the same time.

Also the gym owner said often single climbers will be looking for a belay partner, and of course there's a couple of boldering walls and a traverse cave, so there's plenty to do anytime any of us are there by ourselves.

Overall I am impressed with our local rock climbing gym and community. A very fun, interactive sport and the "veterans" were very helpful and encouraging to us newcomers. No prima donnas like some gyms I have been in before, and a nice mix of age and gender and ability present.

Oh, some tooting my own horn, I've lost over thirty pounds since New Years (278 down to 244 and dropping) primarily from eating cleaner (cutting out fried foods and junk food) and just plain eating smaller portions.

Hopefully becoming more active at the gym I can continue to lose fat but slow or reverse any muscle loss. But I've informally powerlift trained on and off through the years so I have plenty of muscle mass so I'm not worried about that part too much.

It is nice to see some definition coming back, and vascularity starting to pop out with a vengeance now even without a pump, so I know I'm at least moving in a good direction. And I feel A LOT better too.

Anyway, hoping everyone trains hard, trains smart, and has fun! :bassist:

Awesome, let us know how it goes!

I mainly asked because I recently started taking creatine just to see what, if anything, it would do for me.

Today is chest and tri's, which is always one of my favorite days.

No real order to the exercises yet, but we'll be doing:
- bench press
- flys
- decline press
- incline press
- free weight press
- incline flys
- skull crushers
- bent over kickbacks
- one-arm overhead extensions

Takes around 70 minutes to get through and it always leaves me sore!

Does anyone here go to a Gold's Gym? There's one near my new apartments and I'm seriously considering joining it instead of one of the other gyms that's farther out. I know each location is different, but in your experiences would you say it's worth checking out?

Should you take it on your off days, too?

I do, but this is yet another thing where you will get conflicting advice from different sources. Also, some say to "load" it at first, some say that's not necessary. Ive been taking a couple of tsp every morning, including off days.

The last few weeks I'e been taking an additional 2 tsp just before my workouts, but I haven't noticed any difference from the extra servings. I dont think im going to continue that because it makes me a bit nauseous for a while after I take it & that's not something I want while working out. In the past i have taken it after my workouts and that seemed to work fine, but I don't really know if anything more than 2 tsp a day is just being wasted or not.
