You can usually do bouldering without having any training (don't need to belay). Great for working the upper body, particularly your forearms!
After trying out the walls, and getting our belay training, all I can say about climbing is "we're hooked"!
Both my younger sons loved it, as did I, and even though I am (cough cough) significantly heavier than either of them they had no trouble safely belaying and lowering me after my climbs.
So yeah, we officially joined our local rock climbing gym under the family membership. Going again tomorrow evening and I can't wait.
Now of course we are shopping around for our own climbing shoes, harnesses, and chalk bags, but relatively speaking it's actually not a terribly expensive sport to get into. Each of us can get fully fitted out with essentially top of the line equipment for less than $300 per person, (cheaper than a MIM Fender)!
Generally my two sons will climb/belay as a team, and I can hit the weights, power rack, and treadmill more, but we will mix and match on days when we all don't hit the gym at the same time.
Also the gym owner said often single climbers will be looking for a belay partner, and of course there's a couple of boldering walls and a traverse cave, so there's plenty to do anytime any of us are there by ourselves.
Overall I am impressed with our local rock climbing gym and community. A very fun, interactive sport and the "veterans" were very helpful and encouraging to us newcomers. No prima donnas like some gyms I have been in before, and a nice mix of age and gender and ability present.
Oh, some tooting my own horn, I've lost over thirty pounds since New Years (278 down to 244 and dropping) primarily from eating cleaner (cutting out fried foods and junk food) and just plain eating smaller portions.
Hopefully becoming more active at the gym I can continue to lose fat but slow or reverse any muscle loss. But I've informally powerlift trained on and off through the years so I have plenty of muscle mass so I'm not worried about that part too much.
It is nice to see some definition coming back, and vascularity starting to pop out with a vengeance now even without a pump, so I know I'm at least moving in a good direction. And I feel A LOT better too.
Anyway, hoping everyone trains hard, trains smart, and has fun!
