Thanks for the thoughts on my dad. We had an odd relationship, and I went years without seeing him after he had left my mother and me at a young age and went off to start a new family. He moved far away and then eventually returned home when I was an adult, and brought me into one of his bands. We had a much better relationship that way than as father/son. Everything important in my life with him was either involving music or golf. He died suddenly at 59, 8 years ago.
As for the bass, I stripped the paint with Formby's, masked the nut, and did nothing to match the clear--it was perfect when the last of the color came off. It was as though they had cleared them all before adding the color.
Funny enough, that bass has had several necks over the years, and since I took that picture and posted it I've swapped necks again back to a cheap SX fretless. I play every Sunday in a contemporary Christian band at church, and so much of the genre is played on fretless that it makes more sense to have that set up that way than another fretted bass. It's a better fretted P-bass with the original neck, but it's the only body I dare mule a different neck with.
Good luck with your re-fin--in some ways I look back wishing I hadn't done it, but it really does look better in my eyes.
