The OFFICIAL (kinda) HONDO THREAD!!

Peter Hook of joy division, new order fame played a Hondo rik copy. So there one famous hondo player at least in the uk anyway.

Here is a interview where he mentions buying and playing it's fairly amusing I thought. Might be of interest to you hondo fans.

Almost finished with my Hondo P-bass project. Can't find a model number for it. I believe it is the newest version made in Korea. Kind of a nothing special bass. I have modified it from a 4 string to a 5 string. Complete with new pickup, nut, and bridge. Going to add Black tuner tops, Black strap buttons and black knobs to go along with the solid black color and black guard.. Pic's very soon.
EDIT - I think it may be a H820M

What have I done?...just bought a Hondo Deluxe Series 830 bass. Eyes are bad but I'm pretty sure it says 830. Precision body style. Tobacco 'burst, black pickgaurd, black knob (yes, I mean knob...one is missing), black bridge. Weighs about 50 lbs. Bridge is a basic stamped steel unit, not through the bady stringing. Precision style pickup.

This thing is dirty! Got plenty of gunk to clean off of it. AS Dave in Canada would say "lots of DNA".

Gotta check around and see if I can figure out when it was made.

AS Ozzie once said "Oh noooo...please God help meeee! ;)

I'll get a few pics and post them up.

Gave it a good cleaning, polished the frets a bit. Snugged up the gears on the tuners. Pulled the pickguard off and found two differebt kinds of pots. Not sure what's up with that. Took the bridge apart to clean it. I need to pick up some strings.

It has a few nicks and scratches but at least the neck seems good. It could use a repaint but don't think it's worth the trouble. Frets are in good shape.

HEY, I like the 5 string conversion, but I liked how my 4 string played so much that I upgraded all the electronics. Now it sounds as good as it plays.

I bought an SX so I could have a 5 string for... um... emergencies

Do you have to get different pickups for a five string, or does it not matter since the strings don't look like they are any wider?

I changed the bridge, pickup and nut. Added a string tree and the 5th tuner. The pickup is a standard 4 string pickup, just covered so it doesn't look out of place. But this is my 4th one I have done and they turn out really good. I also changed the tuner paddles to black, so they are black and chrome tuners. I changed the knobs to black as well. So it is just about a Midnight bass... Still needs to be set up and the neck needs some tweaking, but she will be up and playing soon enough

I guess a "4-string" pickup should work as long as the strings are over the top of it.
Don't forget the DR Black Beauties to complete the midnightness! I got them on my eSseX, which will be getting the all black treatment.

Sweet guitars everyone. I recently acquired an old Hondo as payment for doin a brake job. It was a mess when I got it. I've replaced the tuners and bridge, and custom made the nut and knobs from brass. I heavily modified the unknown pup and converted it to a wide steel blade, sounds much better. I've done a bit of research and i think it's a Hondo II 830 Deluxe, 1979 (?). It has all the screw holes from the ashtray, pup cover, and thumbhold. It sounds great with black beauties and I'm on day two of adjusting the truss rod. What do you think? Am I in? How close is my guess on the model?
