It's been a year and a half and this bass still gives me great joy whenever I play it.

I have to wait until March/April, but at least my configuration is almost complete! Do you prefer it with dots or blocks?

Specs:

• alder body, wenge top and matte finish;
• hard rock maple (3-piece) neck, matte finish, 38mm nut width with carbon rods;
• katalox fingerboard, super blue 2mm side dots with ring and 14” fingerboard radius;
• matching headstock, matte finish and silver logo, black nut;
• Nordstrand Zen Blade 4 pickups, passive with 2 switches for serial/single coil/parallel;
• black hardware, 19mm bridge spacing;
• ETS knobs, Hipshot A-Style (aluminium) bridge and Hipshot Ultralite Y-style 3/8 tuners.

All these new basses look great… but shout out to this workhorse that’s been getting all the playing time for the last couple years. This time of year makes me really appreciate it when I’m doing rehearsals and gigs every day, to have a great instrument that I’ve gotten so comfortable with. It’s dirty, the matte has been polished smooth in places, and the strings are about 2 years old… but it does everything and it feels like home.

Of course that doesn’t stop me from hitting up the configurator now and then…

I have, but not in a while because I haven’t changed strings. I don’t love it because it’s a little weird how you have to adjust the saddle manually, but once it’s locked it’s fine. I probably would mind it more if I changed strings more frequently.

Yep, posted earlier. TK discovered it originally… I love my DCBs and OBP3, I gig the crap out of mine and can easily tweak for all the tones I need… this one saw a lot of playtime this summer before I finished my custom builds, since then the middle headless in my profile picture gets all of the gigging time, and my Cazpar hangs on the wall in my office. It gets played daily during breaks. Both have the same electronics and are easy to dial in, passive or active is equally rich.

I played a badly setup used Ibanez once that had those Aguilar DCBs, even though it played awful it had a really sweet sound. Some day I’d like to have a bass with those in it.

I have a Maruszczyk that I am struggling with for a distinctive tone and I am thinking of swapping these in to see what I get. I previously had a set in an Ibanez Prestige but I was never happy with any sound out of that bass.....and it may have skewed my thoughts of Aguilar DCB's

Right now I have a pair of Delano SBC 5 HE/S-4 quad coils (Spit P) Series (Reverse P). Not sure they were a good fit for this bass. Plus all of my basses have Delano's in them right now, so it is something inherent to this bass.

I typically run my EQ pretty flat and only make minor adjustments based on the song, I play material in 2 different projects from modern blues, classic rock, 80s rock, pop and heavier to current tunes from the 2000s. As an example for some nasally bite I might roll mostly to the bridge for a Journey or Chili Peppers, type of song, and then middle or roll mostly to the neck for blues and classic rock (P or J sounds) or other 80s, Bon Jovi, ZZ, Black Keys, Gov’t Mule, etc.. and then add a touch of mids (400 or 800) or a lil’ bass as needed. I find that very minor adjustments make a big difference in tone, so it doesn’t take much to achieve what I’m looking for. It makes it easy for me, because I can pick up any one of these instruments and dial in exactly what I need.

I'm finally falling in love with this bass. I ordered it with the wrong strings (steel rounds, what was I thinking), and I only had a bad old set of TI's at home and I couldn't do a proper setup. The A string was floppy and I couldn't stop it from touching the frets.

My luthier caught the problem and I ordered a new set of strings, and with a proper setup now the bass is revealing itself. It's a beast!

One curious detail, this bass was finished on the day of my birthday! When I saw the date on the certificate was the same as my birthday, I knew this one had to be special, haha!

It plays great, super easy. I love the neck. It is a U shaped neck and a little chunkier than the usual Maruszczyk neck. Just as I like it.

It's very light, because the body is chambered, but it balances perfectly, with the Hipshot Ultralight tuners.

Overall construction is great. Fit and finish is perfect.

The only thing that is not 100% is the pickguard. The cut is a little rough on one or two spots. Nothing bad, it's a detail. But I guess the intern did the pickguard this time.

The sound is great. I love the MEC vintage single coil pickup! What a sound! I already new this pickup, from my Warwick Starbass II. The Kloppmann PB63 is a super aggressive P pickup and has a great tone.
The two put together give this scooped tone that is very interesting, I like it. The drawback is that the harmonics are weak, with both pickups. But how many times do we use harmonics in a tune?

I think I will be using the pickups separately. I'm a "bass with one pickup" guy. And I wanted a P tone. But I also wanted something different. The MEC at the neck gives me that. No blend, just a switch, front, back, both. That way, it's like 2 basses with one pickup.

This is my 4th Maruszczyk, so I know what I'm getting. I communicate directly with Adrian (as all of us in Europe, I believe) and it's always easy and straightforward.

Here is a quick and rough audio sample. It's not easy doing it at breakfast time with 3 kids, haha!

Phone mic, with bass with full volume and tone, through a flat Quilter BB800 and PJB C4 Piranha. I think with headphones on, you can get a sense of the tone of the bass.
