The Official MTD USA Thread

Wait a minute, you're serious? You literally bought his actual sushi bass? How did that happen? TELL US THE STORY... or at least tell my you "got me" with the joke. :)

I think this was the one on eBay. I think that Norm sold this one a while back, which was a backup to his original sushi bass that he kept. This one is a newer bass that Norm called the Clone bass since he had Mike T. build it to the exact specs of his original.

Vic,

Looks like the guys here know the story. When Norm started touring with Lincoln Brewster, he was afraid his original MTD would get lost/stolen/damaged, so he had a "clone" made. He played it on tour until Mike made him the Saratoga bass, then he sold it. He preferred the original one, so this one became expendable.

..and I'll have it tomorrow!

I saw this bass or one just like it when I visited Mike's shop. The top is a piece of wood that he got after Audi purchased the majority of it to put on the dashboard ad doors of their A8 L's. I know one of the guys in Gospel Chops bought one, and I thought that I saw that he was selling it because he couldn't get the fretless thing under his fingers, and returned to a fretted MTD.

VERY nice! So whaddya think of it so far? :)

First off, the bass is really light. It weighs in right at 8 pounds, and the balance is perfect. I can actually let it sit on my lap with no hands and it stays put. VERY nice. The fit and finish are top notch. I had a 535 years ago with a pretty noticeable gap in the neck pocket on the bass side. None of that here. Tight as can be. My other issue with the first 535 was the neck profile. It felt extra wide at the nut, but this one is nice and comfy. In fact, I know it's smaller because it fits just fine in my Hercules stand where the other one didn't. I'm also enjoying being back to 19mm spacing at the bridge. My Zon Sonus was just too tight, and it really slowed me down. The color is pretty cool, I usually prefer natural wood finishes, but this burst is neat. It takes a great setup. It's actually too low for me right now, and I never say that!

The fingerstyle tone is very, very good. Punchy and bright like I expected with just enough growl. This bass seems to work my speakers a little harder than my others, but that could just be my imagination or maybe it's the bass frequency it's producing. Could be a little lower than anything I have. I'm running it through an Aguilar AG500SC and (2) GS112's. The slap tone is off the charts in a good way, but what else would you expect from an MTD made for Norm Stockton? :smug:

All in all, I'm extremely happy with it. I've only logged one Sunday service with it, so I still have some experimenting to do with string, setup, etc. It has some D'Addario's on it now, which I usually don't care for too much though they sound nice on this.. I'm a pretty devout DR guy.

I've owned two MTD's before this one, and have played probably 10-12 of them over the years and this one is exceptional. Maybe because it's an artist bass, or it could just be that one special bass that turns out every so many builds.. Either way, I'm glad I own it.. :)

Is that a burl top, tulipwood body, and wenge/wenge neck/FB?
If so, that's what my Rodman 535 is, and it's just simply awesome.

Juan Nelson's original MTD 535 he had on the Bass Player Mag was on eBay not too long ago also, or maybe I was looking through completed listings, not sure... But I just remember seeing it there. Went for a GREAT price, too!

Awesome bass mang.
