The Official MTD USA Thread

Here it is... And it's all because of you I want an MTD :eyebrow:

Those aren't the stock tone control knobs, are they?

According to the previous owner, it's stock, it's Hipshot 'O Ring' knobs.

Hmmm - I've never seen those on a 535 before.

Edit: did some checking and those are definitely not stock (unless you just bought the bass new, which it seems you didn't). I just wanted to know because I prefer the standard knobs Mike has been using.

The previous owner give full disclosure of this bass, he even sent me the original Letter from Mike Tobias, and the un-filled waranty form. He'd mention if he replaced anything.

So I guess it's stock, I've seen one or two online with those knobs too. Well, no complaints from me, it works well, looks and feels great. ;)

Yep, I've seen those before. Mike doesn't ship those on basses, but sometimes his dealers swap the stock rubberized ones out. Glenn at Austin Bass Traders has been known to do this. So no, they're not stock, but, it's entirely possible the bass shipped from the dealer brand new that way.

If you're not digging the Wenge neck, I suggest you try some light gauge nickel strings (40-120 or 45-130). The nickel seems to help tone down the punchiness a good bit and makes it sound warmer as well.

Thanks for the advice, but it seems that I have to let this one go :crying: A friend of mine is ready to pay for it, the thing is I got to find a new one, so if any one of you got something, let me know.

MTDs are phenomenal, they nail that 'Sound in my head', after picking up totom's bass, I can't get over it, I think that's why they're very sought after.

I got a few PMs about my 'Rodman', that's insane... I don't even have to put it on classified and I already have people interested.

I can very highly recommend Glenn at Austin Bass Traders. Also, our own Joelc73 used to be involved with The Groove Shoppe who had a MTD dealership. He may still maintain the ability to buy/sell MTD basses as well. If so, the nice thing about Joel (Cataldo) is he has regular and local access to Mike's shop, so he often has "inside info" on woods and such. Worth a check at least.

Thanks...

I'm very close to making a deal with the guys at Bass Exchange. Hope it works, I'm still avoiding to spend (even more) money.

Hmm the figured Maple model is the only thing up on BassExchange I'd consider buying, and quite frankly I don't think you're going to be as happy with an Ash neck as you would a maple neck, based on what you've said. You don't want the one with the Wenge neck, and the chambered one on there is going to give you a very distinct tone that will probably only work for a small portion of what you play... but that's just my opinion.

IIWY I would consider going traditional: Ash body, Maple neck, and whatever top you want.

I want a link to the bass in question, and I want it now. :)

They have pulled the bass down from their site, it's actually on hold for me, just need to discuss the payment, I still can back off, but I probably won't.

If you guys saw it last week, it's the pre-owned, figured maple top, ash body and neck, Honduran rosewood board, 24 frets. I was told that it was a 2006 NAMM Bass, the top itself worth $1000

I have tried the Ash neck-Maple board, which in all odds, fits my taste. And after a long discussion with the guys at Bassexchange, it seems that this one will suit my taste the best.

Maple-maple/rosewood neck on an MTD is just not an 'MTD signature' for me
