The other thing is, that'll of course limit your choices, and Mike's basses are pretty strongly about a personal fit, so be prepared to flip a few over time until you finally find "yours". The good news is, if you do manage to find some at that price, you should be able to flip them at little or no loss, which is always good.
Yeah I've owned 5 so far...... The ash body walnut top maple board like yours Vic is my favorite so far..... For 3k I'll find a nice used one..... Won't be no marilyn but it'll be fine ...... I was so close to pulling the trigger on yours!.... Mikes basses are killer and they pop up often enough.... Just a waiting game lol

I'm about to receive Greg's old alder/maple/maple/rosewood 535 but it's being held hostage at customs!

My two ladies have arrived- a blond and a brunette. I got home this morning at 4am after being away on business for two days. There,outside my apartment door, were two rectangular packages. They had been there since Friday afternoon, evidently. Thank God nobody stole them-amazing, actually, when you consider they were outside for 30-40 hours. Fed Ex was supposed to require a signature, but I guess they have a better idea....
anyway: The basses are better than I could have hoped. As Mike said, they are like Jazz Basses on steroids. Fantastic tone; better than I could have imagined. I could only play them for about 15 minutes, because I'm back out on the road paying for these two beauties. The fretless nailed the fretless mwaa characteristics you look for, along with a fantastic jazz bass tone. The fretted is a fantastic slapper. With just a quick scooping of the mids, and boosting the bass and treble, it goes from a Jaco tone to as modern as anybody could want.
I noticed that when I adjusted it for a Jazz bass sound, the tone was perfect, with the addition of the bass frequencies having a greater depth and quality compared to a passive bass. Sort like what a good tube amp (Reeves, Mesa, etc) imparts on tone vs. the less dimensional quality of ss. Pictures to follow in a few hours when I get a little more time.
