Here's my current set up in Brazil. One day I will have the whole gang here.

4 bolts, 5 bolts, 6 bolts, neck through.

It's great bang for the buck. The neck is lovely, the tone is okay as-is, might upgrade the pickup at some point but I'm not in any hurry. The tuners could be better, I'll likely upgrade those sooner than later.

Thanks! The strap is an Ernie Ball woven strap w/coloured & silver thread. I shot the hs with satin black and used paint pens to mimic the strap motif.

Just finished modding this VM that i picked up for a song locally. I think it looks great! Plays and sounds fantastic, too!

I have some other, "nicer" basses, but this is my go to for practicing at home.

I made a thread about the upgrades as well.

Those 70's p basses made of natural wood drive me crazy !

Let me guess : the body is made of ash, it punches more than anything else and low notes are beefy ?

It’s actually not the heavy ash, it’s likely swamp ash, as it comes in under 9lbs.

It’s does sound awesome though it’s closer to the 60s tone with a snarlier 70s pickup. But it’s not like those super heavy late 70s p basses

My old 1970's Vega Power jazz bass, awfully painted by its previous owner.
Replaced the bridge, pickguard, electronics cover and pickups recently, and installed some Rotosound 88 nylon flats on it.
Heavy as shag, since it's a 1970's bass, but plays like a charm.

I’ve also been trimming down my collection as it was getting out of hand.

Only thing missing from pics are my Stratocasters and my acoustics (Gibson J45 and Martin M36)

Is that an Ibanez Saber bass??? With the green strings

Edit just re read the post. Very nice. I always wanted to try one of those with the super thin bodies and black is the coolest color they came in. One of my favorite death metal albums was recorded with one and I've been fascinated with them since. Just impossible to find

Yes poochiecheeks, that is an SB900 Ibanez Sabre Bass with the green DRs on it! Those basses are amazing! I had a laser blue one that I was original owner of back in 1990-91 I believe? This black one was one my wife spotted (an eagle eye she has) on FB marketplace for next to nothing. These basses have really hot output active pickups, they have a nice tonal range for metal and funk. I have played them in both genres. They are extremely light and have very fast, unfinished necks. If you can ever find one BUY IT! I have run mine with alt tunings and all sorts of string gauges. Wish they would reissue this line, I like the SB900s even better than the 1200s if you ever run across either one. You can sometimes find them on eBay or Reverb for 300-400 but they sell almost immediately, people never know what they have is rare.

Finally, after a load of tweaking, my DIY project is playable.
This bass consists of the body of a cheap Harley Benton P-bass, a J-bass neck I ordered from China, fitted with an EMG GZR P-pickup, and some budgetfriendly Guyker tuners.

I sanded the body and repainted it in metallic black to give it a somewhat reliced look, and painted the headstock and pickguard to match the body.
Unfortunately standard P-bass pickguards won't fit these HB bodies, but 3 coats of paint do hold well.

Intonation was an issue, but that's solved now, after loads of fine tuning.
The action stays a bit on the high side, even after adjusting the saddles and sanding the nut, though due to the low tuning (AEAD) it's not too much of an issue.
The HB bass had lots of neckdive with the original neck, and the nutwidth of 42 mm was a bit too wide for my liking, so that explains the J-neck.
It's a bit lighter as well, and no more neckdive.
