I'm an upright player for the most part. The Ibenez came free with a Leslie cabinet I bought several years ago. The guy was moving and threw it in just to get it into a new home, and I just couldn't resist getting the Ashbory. Great sounding axe that is sure to turn heads.
The Ashbory was developed in England in the 1980s and issued by Guild here in the states. It was later reissued by Fender in 1999. Fretless, with silicon strings and a special designed piezo pickup it has a very acoustic attack and sustain and sounds very much like an upright. The Guild models had tuner problems that Fender fixed in the reissue. The silicon strings take several days to stabilize and the "G" and "D"are subject to breaking - sometimes when it is in the case. I now use AQUILA bari/bass ukulele strings and it is much improved without much change in sound. I bought mine new for under $300 in 1999 when the Fender/DeArmond version was introduced and found it a great addition.
