The Old Ironing Board Trick

An average set of strings put about 150 pounds of force on a guitar but you expect me to believe that gravity will pull your headstock down 1/16"??

Nope I don't believe it

the laws of physics will not support that conclusion

What does your headstock weigh? less than a pound ... how does that counteract 150 pounds of force, plus the stiffness of the wood, plus the stiffness of the truss rods ...

It doesn't

So if I'm playing guitar in my bedroom & check the tuning sitting upright & then decide to lay on my back & check the intonation again & find the strings have uniformly gone a few cents sharp, then what is occuring?

It doesn't

& your right, it's probably not 1/16" , but it is measurable.
 
Maybe it's time to measure relief in both orientations to see if there is a difference that matters. Only needs to be .001" to matter.

Also, my ironing board is not stable enough for me to use it in this way. I would be too afraid of it tipping over with the bass.
 
I overslept this morning and I was running late for work, I pulled a wrinkled shirt out of my dresser and then remembered reading something on TB about basses and ironing boards, so I used my '75 re-issue as an ironing board ..... got to work, read through this whole thread .... feeling pretty stupid right now.
That's one way to relic a finish! I wonder if ironing the strings is as good a boiling them.:)

many necks respond to hand pressure ... you can push and pull most necks sharp and flat ... perhaps when you lay on your back you push harder on the neck to play ...

I used to own a 1968 4001 Rickenbacker ... the necks on the 60s Ricks were so thin that it was pretty easy to bend them ... I used to pull back on the neck when I wanted more fret buzz ... I never measured the amount of force applied ... on that bass maybe 10 pounds of force was enough ... That is my best guess

Some of my basses also have pliable necks ... but some are stiff and hard to move at all.
 
One end of wifey's kitchen island.
It's the perfect width for the body to lay flat on a VERY THICK, unused towel(padding) with a specific piece of foam under the neck at about the 12th fret. Have a seat, work away, strings or setup or mods.
 
You should not set action while the bass is oriented face up. Gravity will pull down on your neck and you'll have more relief when playing than you expect. Adjustments need to be made in playing position.

Others have commented, but this is unscientific nonsense. The tension on a 4 string bass is in the neighborhood of 100-150 pounds or so. The neck weighs about 3-5 pounds max including hardware (and the strings themselves). If you really think changing gravity by 90 degrees is going to make a significant difference you are seriously deluded.

Can't see any point in trying to 'convert' believers of this particular bass thing....

Let them be.....They are happy and causing nobody any harm....:thumbsup:

I HAD a Stingray whose was so rubbery that when I picked up out of the case I could watch the relief increase.
