The one bad thing about a new bass...

..no mojo!

After getting my first new bass in almost 4 years,it's weird and almost wrong having a bass with no mojo on it. It bothers me a lot. It's just...so..clean..sterile looking. It's making me play the crap out of this bass hoping to work some magic on it,which isn't a bad thing.

Anybody else feel this way? I'm not one for beat up looking basses but I do like a bass that looks like it's been played,especially if it's mine.

I hear ya. I don't like new instruments because I'm always worried about scratching it up at first. I usually buy used because I like something thats a little worn (and cheaper!)

If this were a more expensive bass then I'd feel that way,but since it's cheap I don't care about scratches,or dings.

I feel the same way. Every used bass has a story. I especially like the pawn shop finds. Of my 8 basses, I only bought one new.

All of my instruments are used, so I guess I'll never really know. When I bought my car new though, I freaked out at the slightest sign of wear. Now I call it 'character'.

I prefer to buy new because I like my basses to look as new and shiny as possible for as long as possible. However, I'm not gonna have a heart attack if there's an "accident" and it gets a little scuffed. No matter how hard you try, unless you keep it in a case all the time (and where's the fun in that?) it will get some wear and tear. If it gets dinked, I'll be upset for a couple of minutes, then I'll be like "oh well ... it was inevitable". But I will certainly not allow it to be messed up if can help it.

Can't a bass look like new and STILL have mojo?

Mojo isn't something you see, it's something you feel.

It's you seeping unto your instrument, remnants of your unique essence and vibe floating off of you like dust and cascading over your bass, settling upon it and calling it forever home.

So that when someone else picks up your instrument it whispers, "5string5fingers was HERE".

Every bass I own right now was bought new, and I like the fact that all the "mojo" is from me. That doesn't mean I'm opposed to buying used.

Mojo is on the inside. Play the snot out of it for a few years and it will have mojo - whether you can SEE it or not.

i hate new bass's there's so much messing about before they become truly yours
eg new strings, new action setup, adjust intonation
then there's peeling that stupid plastic stuff off the scratchplate and peeling those silly stickers off the volume and tone knobs too

I agree. I have to own and play the crap out of a bass for several months until it feels like mine. Until then it feel's as if I'm borrowing a bass or it's just someone elses. It's like new blue jeans,or dickies pants. You have to wear and wash them a lot until they become comfortable.
