i would say a bit of common sense!!! and ability to react to things around you!!!

I almost said DI but I still advocate micing a bass rig live so maybe not. I mean I love showing up to a gig with a gig bag with a Bassbone in it and that's my rig, but that's not for everybody. I think I'll go with compressor. Bass can often have trouble being heard in a mix (and don't we know it!) I'm not talking psychoacoustics here: I mean that theres few venues that don't suck all the bass out of a room or pump it all out into a much respectivley, and a nice tight compression can often solve that.

I think there is no one pedal/effect/doohickey or whatever that is essential other than a bass, cord, and amp/DI.

Like everyone said, tuner. Boss TU-2 works beautifully.

After that, overdrive hands down.

Nice The one thing that the tone hammer has the the M-80 doesn't, is another 50 or so bucks to the price

Because if I'm only going to have one pedal, its definitely going to be that one.

Assuming that like me you have a compressor and tuner in your rack already, the one pedal you should have is a Bass Microsynth.

I get my rocks off more with that than any other pedal I own.

Arguments could be made for dirt or filters or whathaveyous, but the BMS is my go to.

I got thinking about this again. Setting aside the DI, Tuner, and Compressor I would have to say that my wah pedal is most essential to "my sound". Although I don't use my Dunlop as often as I would like in my cover band, I use it quite a bit at home.

When I got started on bass I emulated Cliff Burton. While I still love Metallica, my tastes have evolved into other things. But that heavy metal wah sound is still something I just NEED every once in a while. You know what I mean?
