The one that got away

I was waxing poetic this afternoon and wallowing in woe over the bass that got away. Actually that's not true; I let it go and I regret it big time now.

My precious Washburn Force 4 ABT that I got for a steal and sold for more than I paid. I did it to get the five string version of the same bass, and while I do like the 5'er, I've discovered in the long process that I'm just a four stringer at heart. I miss that bass so much and would gladly trade my five for a four. *Sigh*

I went through getting a 5er and finding out it isn't my cup of tea. Luckily, I have a few 4s. Ended up using the 5er as trade in on one I really like.

I miss my old 77 Rick 4001. I'd buy it back.

The only bass I've regretted selling, and thought about buying another of, is a German Thumb 5 BO. Nothing else sounds or plays like it. Though, I might consider a 4 banger version.

I had a '78 Musicmaster that had been professionally converted to fretless... Stolen from me about 30 years ago. I guess, technically it didn't "get way"... more like "taken away". Still, I'd love to get it back!

When you don't need the B-string, it makes a neat-o thumb rest!

Yeah, but the string spacing is so close on mine that it makes it more difficult to play certain stuff, especially if it's a song where I have to dig in.

2. Xotic XB2-6 in candy green metallic
3. 2008 new old-stock Warwick Thumb 6 broad-neck

WHY? WHY? WHY? WHY? You really don't know what you have until it's gone.

Someday we shall be reunited for good.

I've had 2 basses I've regret letting go. I had an ibanez sound gear sr300 that to this day still has the fastest neck I ever played on, and a Spector rebop I sold after I got my first Warwick thumb bass. Now my warwicks thumbs are the best sounding basses I've ever owned but id still love to have that ibanez and Spector to noodle on just for fun

A couple I wish I had back.
1980 Ibanez Blazer, my first "real" bass.
1996-97 Tobias Growler, gigged the hell outta that bass, lightweight, great tone. Should have never sold it.

There is a reasom I've held onto my next one for over 30 years.

My Lakland skyline DJ4 (seen in my avatar), stolen a few years ago. Very nice bass, though not so special that I could not replace it with another DJ4. Maybe some day...

Not so much the one that got away as the one I had to sell. That's the only thing I ever owned that I truly missed after it was gone.

As far as my missed opportunities to buy something, those are too numerous to mention.

But I've learned (and gradually come to accept) that what comes around goes around. So I now play the long game. Which means: be patient, keep your eyes open, avoid impulse buying and bank the money - and move fast once you make a decision.

I had a six string Washburn that I wish I still had. It was the only one that got away that I wish I still had, and it's not that I liked six strings as I am a 4 stringer at heart. It's just that I think now I could've used that bass to jam on.
