The one that got away.

In the early 1980's I had to sell 6 of mine because I was 23 and had to take care of my baby girl. 
1965 Fender Jazz Bass (refin)
1968 Fender Telecaster Bass
1968 Fender Coronado II Wildwood Bass
1978 Music Man Sting Ray Bass
1979 Music Man Sabre Bass
1976 Gibson G3
I had a whopping $1500 tied up in them. They'd be worth a bit more nowadays.

I had a whopping $1500 tied up in them. They'd be worth a bit more nowadays.
My first real bass was a borrowed Yamaha Motion B. Covered EMG humbuckers, black body, no cheesy 80's YAMAHA MOTION B graphic on front upper horn, chrome HW, high mass bridge w/o micro tuners.
Guy who owned it gave me the chance to give him what a store was offering in trade in value (couple hundred, and I just couldn't come up with it. I was delivering autoparts for $141.50 take home a week).
Been looking for that exact combination, and have gotten close. Closest was one that was lavender (such a cool color in the 1980's), but that would clash with the magenta keytar player.
Also just let a >10 pound Peavey T-40 natural with black slip through my hands for >$300.

BC Rich Mockingbird from the 80's in transparent red. Sold to fund a car. That bass practically played itself. The car didn't really live long as it was totalled in an accident.
Early model, 2 pickup, white Peavey Fury from 1984 if I remember correctly. I loved that bass and still don't know what happened to it. Great player and worked in all types of music situations.
I traded away a beautiful black Classic 50's Precision, that is the only bass I truly regretted moving on. I actually tried to get it back but missed it by half a day. I tried others of the same model but never bonded with them. It had an amazing sound. I have since discovered that I do better on basses with a 1.625 nut. So I guess it worked out in the end.
Those are the three I wish I still had in my collection.

1994 Ibanez SR1305PM. What an amazing bass that was. Super B string, top notch construction, very comfortable, but the pickups were pretty low on output. I SHOULD have held onto it but I ended up trading it for an Eden 4x10. I'll eventually find a clean one again, swap out those lame PUPs and be happy.
It was actually a birthday gift from a girl who liked me back then (THAT one is a long story). She showed up at my house after she purchased it new and when I politely refused it (since it was WAY too much gift), she started crying. I immediately accepted and she was happy. I felt pretty messed up for never asking her out/dating her after she gave me the bass even though she never asked for it back. It was my only 5 string UNTIL a girl I started dating bought me my Fodera 5 as a Christmas present...well, after a girl buys you something like that, well, you've got to marry that.

I love my Roscoe 5 (didn't care for my Sadowsky 5) but I'd buy this back in a heartbeat.

G+L L2000E Got my first 5 string and wasn't playing it much. Wife couldn't work as she was staying home and taking care of her disabled daughter. Sold for the $$$ Great bass... wish I had it back.
I used to have a Gibson Ripper, professionally defretted. One day, a (supposed to be) "friend" asked me whether I could lend him a bass. I didn't know he was on heroin, my mistake. Never seen that bass again. The trouble is not the bass itself (I am not that found of Gibson nor fretless basses) but the fact that my trust has been betrayed.
Yup, bought a 1965 Fender Jazz Bass in 1966. Toured with it from '71 to '74, then used it in casual groups. Moved to Oregon and 1976 and the house we were temporarily staying in was burglarized. Stole my bass, my Standel amp (wish I had that back too), my two mics, and one microphone stand - no idea why the left the second stand. Maybe it was too heavy for them.

I miss it in that I would love to get its value, but I rarely played it and it was more of a novelty toy. Either way, people who steal instruments are awful.

My 1st 'real' bass was an '82 StingRay (Beautiful Sunburst w/ a black pg and a maple fretboard) that I bought new in '83. When I left the Army in '89 I moved to Atlanta and got married to a woman who turned out to be something of a fugitive at the time. Found out she had arrest warrants in 3 other states (all due to traffic offenses) and was then on the verge of losing her driving privileges in Georgia. (THAT should've been my 1st clue!) My insurance company rep gave me 2 options when I called to put her on my policy; "either take a pair of scissors, cut her drivers' license in half and mail it to US....or we're gonna need about a $3,000.00 downpayment and your monthly payment will be about $450.00.......PER MONTH!!!! Sooooooo......with that I took my 'Ray to a consignment shop and reluctantly surrendered it for about $1,1000. (I had paid $650.00 for it brand new!) I rationalized "I'll get another one once I'm on my feet financially in a yr or so!" It was within that year I realized how difficult that would be to do. I didn't get my hands on a Pre EB 'Ray until July of 2007! (I divorced the '1st' Mrs Brown in '95 by-the-way!) And I love my 'Ray, but there's nothing like my "1st Love". I miss her so.

The first bass I played was a beat up copper Danelectro Shorthorn, owned by my uncle. Even though he didn't play bass, he would not sell it to me.
The first bass I bought was a black Ric 4001s when I was about 14. When I was in college, I went to the studio with that and a Fender. Every song, the Fender worked better, so I ended up selling the Ric forc$500.

My buddy tried to sell me a beautifully aged natural/rosewood late 50's or early 60's P Bass for $250.00. Unfortunately, I had just bought a shiny new Univox P Bass copy... so I foolishly declined his offer. I found out later that he got $175.00 for it at the local music store. Yeah he was a massive pothead...
I still periodically kick myself in the ass over that one.
