The Ox

well the Ox was my MAIN influence on bass and i feel so lucky to have seen him live (im 26 so i couldnt see tommy) he will always be missed and copied daily by myself.

and for more standout tracks try and get 'odds and sods' and listen to 'we close tonight' (it was supposed to be in quadrophenia with behind blue eyes but they got cut) the bass solo is amazing also on his solo stuff try 'dancin master' for a nice disco track (read: song of bass solos and guitar/bass deuling) its on 'too late the hero' album

+1 on Live at Leeds. He is right up front in the mix on that one and he sounds UNBELIEVABLE. I think that he holds back on some of the studio recordings, which is probably why you aren't hearing what you're looking for. He plays very freely on this recording, and does a lot of things you can't find in the studio cuts.

BTW, I say props to Pete Townsend for having so much respect for John's talent. I'm sure he is partly responsible for John being so strong in the mix live.
