The Passinwind Open Source Preamp

OK, the fog in my head finally lifted enough for the light to come on. (Maybe the double shot of rum did more than relax me)
So in the switch diagram, the 1500pf cap is C10 on the schematic. Now it all makes sense. As much as anything ever makes sense to me...

We can also switch another cap in series with the cap in the other leg, especially if we start with a bigger value than what's in there now, which gives a fairly different set of curves. That's the way Bart does their mid switching IIRC. Or we could switch both those legs at the same time if keeping more or less the same Q is a priority. The first method is pretty simple and the graphs are also useful for setting just one trial frequency by tack soldering the cap across the outer pins on the mid pot.

BTW, I just did a little trial of the two band version I put in the Marco 5 string today. I like it a lot and I think a passive treble control should dovetail very nicely. That bass sounds ridiculous in a very good way.

The signal and bass and mid caps are pretty much all on 5 mm pin spacing, so quite a few other brands and types will most likely fit and work OK. I'd recommend at least sticking with the suggested 2.5% caps for C6 and C7 and 1% resistors for the frequency and resonance bits though: R11, R12, R13, R14, and R15. We definitely don't want this thing to turn into an oscillator, which it would be perfectly happy to do with a little "encouragement."

Thanks, that's good to know! For the small cost of caps and resistors, I may just order more. I mostly need to inventory my pots to see what I have and then source some cheaper pots since this will be a stompbox and I don't want to spend $90 on the spec'ed pots alone!

The inexpensive dual gang pots from Tayda have been working OK for me:

If you want to keep things cheap and single source with the same shaft format you can go with this for bass and mids:

All of those pots would benefit from being mounted on little daughter cards, as IME the PC mounting pins sometimes tend to loosen up or even break after being reworked a few times. OSH Park probably already has some, if anyone has a little time to burn looking through their share section. I can whip up some board layouts eventually myself if needed though.

Mouser stocks inexpensive detented 50K linears from Alpha, and several other similar options, and then you can go to places like Best Bass Gear, Mojotone, Allparts, ect. for the ones you see in many commercial onboard builds. The four dollar Nobles at BBG are my current favorites, FWIW.

Oh, and in a pinch a 10K dual gang linear pot works fine for freq too, and the sweep will go a little lower, but the taper is just not as nice feeling or intuitive to use. IIRC Mouser stocks a few.

Cool, thanks. I was also thinking of doing one with space for three mid caps on the board to make wiring the mid shift switching a bit easier and tidier. I'm likely to be seriously slammed with some contract work for a few weeks now though, and I also want to bring some new bling along to the Seattle GTG at the end of April.
 
One more question. The FDeck HPF uses a 10k volume pot, whereas most basses use 250k or 500k. Does it matter for this design? If not, I'll just default to 250k since they are cheap and I have some on hand.

Either 500K or 250K will work OK, but you might want to try both and see which you like better for your specific bass. Eventually we'll get to fine tuning the input impedance for various builds, but I think there's already quite a lot to work through right now for the early builder crew, so simpler is probably better. On my latest 2-band build I am trying 10K after the preamp, with just a 500K blend in front. There are tradeoffs either way, as usual.

Disclaimer: For a while I've been wanting to put one or another of my DIY onboard preamp designs into an open source DIY oriented format that other TB'ers can build and readily tweak to their particular wants and needs. I've finally settled on a specific concept and am well into testing a few different versions. I'm about to send out a build kit to my first beta tester, and I will also have a few builds mounted in stompboxes and a bass or two at NAMM in a few weeks. I'm hoping to have v1.0 wrapped up a few weeks after the show, at which point I will release a board share at OSHpark.com, where anyone can order up three boards at a time at OSHpark's usual DIY-friendly rates. I'll have zero financial stake in that, and likewise for the BOMs for Mouser and Digikey that I will also provide. All of this has already been vetted by the TB Admins, and I recently ported my status to Commercial User in anticipation of eventually licensing this or some other of my designs to one or more OEMs. I think that puts everything up front, but please just ask if anything seems shady in any way. This is new territory for me and I want everything to be fun for all involved.

Intro: OK, so what about the pie, already? The design features pretty standard bass and midrange control circuits, with a treble section using a swept frequency, variable resonance low pass filter. Here's a graphical representation of various treble control sweeps modeled in LTspice:

And here's a look at the Resonance control function, with Frequency set at the lowest setting:

These are just sample filter alignments and overall gain settings, there is a fair bit of adjustability available with a few component value tweaks.

Here's the first gen circuit board, which has already been superseded by a new one of the same size, which is roughly 2.2" x 1.67":

Current cost from OSHpark shows three boards at $18.30, shipping to nearly anywhere included. Things like board sharing or group buys on pots or other parts will be up to whatever community evolves from this thread. Open Source means that any or all of you are free to do your own perfboard or PCB layouts, mods, ruthless criticism, and so on -- as long as you share all that stuff here. I'll be happy to provide tech support until a mature build spec is reached, and hopefully we can then have a TB Wiki featuring collective wisdom on best building practices, wins and losses with specific pickups and instruments, sound samples, and of course build pics.

As far as overall cost, I anticipate that $50-100 will cover most build specs. Shipping from at least two or three parts sources will likely suck up a fair amount of that at first, but hopefully we can eventually figure out a way to mitigate that some.

I've gone out of my way to use simple "cookbook" type public domain circuits and to avoid using hard to source parts like reverse audio taper dual pots. I have spec'ed fairly expensive and somewhat obscure opamps, but many cheaper and more common subs will probably also work pretty well. If that proves to be true then paring the BOM down to a single source list will be a lot more feasible.

Ok guys, I'm here to tell ya, it's a killer preamp! I've got the first one working as a pedal so I can try it with several basses and Charlie has given me some info about some tweaks I want to try. It's totally saved one of my basses that I really wanted to like, but the Bart Mk1 pickups and preamp made it sound compressed and it had weird hot spots on some notes while others sounded muffled and choked. With the Mk1 preamp bypassed it sounds fantastic through the PW3LPF even with the Mk1 pickups. I *really* like having the LPF for the highs. I've never used a preamp with that feature, but it's really intuitive and brings a whole other realm of possibilities to the table.
You're gonna dig it!
