The Pedulla Club!

Just got this baby yesterday from here on TB and I'm really diggin' it. It's the most comfortable 5 string I've ever played and it has the potential to sound great.

TB5-2Fullfront2.jpg

Wow, that’s a stunner, ric – unusual color for a T-bolt from what I’ve seen from pics of the other member’s basses! Glad to have you in the Club!

I decided to re-do my Pedulla Rapture, removing all the Bartolini pickups and electronics (I like the Barts, but LOVE Delano) and installed the Aggie OBP-3, Delano JMVC 5 FE jazz pickups, and a Delano SBC 5HE soapbar between the two jazz p/u's), changed the bridge from the standard Pedulla barrel (17.5mm) to a brass hipshot A (18mm), black dye on the fingerboard, and some custom decal work on the pickguard - I'm working on the same decal on a black pickguard - I need to order a black Rapture truss rod cover; the purple kinda kills the whole vibe that the bass is giving).

The only thing I should have looked into further, was the combination of using all 3 pickups together; by selecting any combination between the J's and SB, there is some phase cancellation (I think that's what its called) where the B,E, and A strings are thin (and when I change the hot and ground on the SB the B,E, and A are full, but the D & G are weak). I even installed a mini-toggle for the SB to switch between North Coil / Series / South Coil to try to find which coil in the SB is having the phase issue, but no combo seems to remedy this :crying:

And how does it sound? Pit Bulls and German Sheppards cower in fear when I start digging in :bassist: ... yea, its very aggressive (and I know the Pro Steels on there give it even more teeth!).

and what's left...get the Pedulla decal on the headstock (already printed it out), the new (black) truss rod cover from Pedulla, finish the black pickguard, send it in for a full setup, and finally apply the vinyl Egyptian eyes of Horus fret board markers - I just need to get the guys in my band to learn Maiden's Powerslave and I'll be set :bassist:

Hi Guys,
I ordered one custom built Thunderbolt 5 6 years ago at the time I play 5er and consider it as one of the best 5 strings bass I have. I live in Bangkok with so very little population of Pedullas that I have no chance to experience other models and now I like to get a 4 strings from Pedulla (new and used) which I think I will play on it more often that the 5.
I wonder if other model like Thunderbass or MVP has the similar tone character as Thunderbolt which I like or not. I do not like the body style of Rapture so I wish to leave it off my check list.
Please advise.
Thanks.

I bought mine essentially sight unseen. I'd never played a Pedulla before, but I'd heard of them. I saw a craigslist ad for a 6 string Thunderbolt for $700, and I knew that this was a fantastic deal for such an instrument.

I went to the pawn shop and didn't see it anywhere, and I assumed that I'd missed out on it. I asked about it and it was actually behind the counter. They'd marked it down to $500 to boot!

There was some concern about its condition. There was a lot of finish wear and dings along with a small crack near the C string machine head, but I took it to my repair tech and he got it fixed up with no problems. For $600 I got out with a 1993 6 string Pedulla Thunderbolt with a fresh set of strings. Not too bad, if I do say so myself!

Wow, that's a killer deal!

A few years ago I made the rounds to a few local Houston guitar shops looking for some fretless basses to try out. Rockin’ Robin had a couple – forget what exactly, but it seems like one was a Tobias (don’t remember if it was even one of the good ones). As luck would have it, the Guitar Center I went to afterwards had a used Pentabuzz, and all I can say is WOW! The tone simply blew away the others. I’ve been gassing for one ever since, but have had a hard time justifying dropping that kind of coin for something I probably wouldn’t use a lot, and who knows, might not ever get good at.

Came across a used MTD Kingston 5-string fretless at Rockin’ Robin this afternoon, and while the price was right for a “beginner” fretless (~$900), the sound wasn’t much different than a fretted bass. I guess I’m just going to have to ante up for a Buzz eventually if I want that sound!

Not quite a Buzz, but this Music Man sounds pretty sweet!

Nice one, inthebasscleff! Back when I got my Thunderbass I didn’t care for Zebrawood, but the more of them I see, the more I like it. I may have to trade my Cocobolo T-bass eventually! That’s especially nice example of the wood on yours, very symmetrical on the right and left sides of the bass.

Every time I play my ThunderBolt 5 it makes my other basses seem lame. :eyebrow:
It's the only bass I have that doesn't have some idiosyncrasy somewhere on the neck. No hot spots, dead spots, wolf tones, etc. Just nice even consistency anywhere on the neck.
