As far as spacing goes, I prefer 19mm, my PentaBuzz is 19, but my fretted TB 6 is 17.5 so it's really a little tight. I like it a lot but if I get a chance I'd rather go 19 (with an MVP 6 if possible).

Leaving the fretboard “as is,” AudioDwebe. I asked my luthier about it and he was kinda “meh” to the idea of applying a coating, saying any benefit isn’t worth the added expense. He also says adding or changing any kind of finish to aged woods almost always has an adverse affect on tonal quality (yes, even if it’s only 7 years old like my T-bass).

What really sold me on not doing a coating was what I saw at this post, indicating that a “naked” ’board gets a broader range of sounds. It’s been a long time since I’ve come across a Buzz in a guitar shop for a comparison, but my “starter” fretless, a 4-sting Schecter with a rosewood fretboard, can indeed get a broad range of tones; fully panning between the pickups it hardly sounds like the same instrument.

Didn't know about the aged wood...good to know.

The Pentabuzz was always the epitome of a fretless sound in my mind (messed around with one about 30 years ago), with Mark Egan being one of my all-time favorites.

I only started playing bass a few years ago and actually picked up my dream fretless (yep, a PB). Funny thing is, in those few years my taste in a fretless tone has changed to the more organic and rich tones offered by uncoated ebony.

I absolutely love the tones my zebrawood Thunder produces. I have several basses and switch them up on a pretty regular basis. And they all sound great.

But whenever I return to the Thunderbass, I fall in love all over again. I picked up a matching TB (same year, too, 2007) about a year or so ago locally with the purpose of turning it into a fretless. Haven't got around to making that happen yet.

I have bought a bunch of basses in the time I've been playing with the intention of finding just one (or maybe two) and selling off the rest. Right now, I'm a collector, and I really don't want to be.

I've got a new bass inbound, having bought it with a "This just might be the one" mentality. I think it will be a fantastic instrument but...we'll see.

I only wish my TBs were 17.5 rather than the 19.

Well, I certainly wouldn’t shell out for a de-fret job if you’d prefer the 17.5 neck! The nice thing about buying used is that you don’t take much of a hit when you re-sell. So why not try to find a pair of 17.5s and then flip your 19s?

Current lineup...

I got the Cocobolo topped Thunderbolt with the full intent to swap the pickups and pre, but after living with it a while with new strings, I won't change a thing. I guess that top really affects the tone. The maple topped T-bolt sounded dead (before the electronics swap) compared to this one... but its still my #1. After going thru 4 T-bolts, these are keepers. My next Pedulla will be a Thundebass... unless a particular blue T-bolt comes back for sale when I have the cash.

Ok, just got a (2001?) Rapture in pristine shape on a Craig's List swap deal and I'm really loving it so toss me a number on this distinguished list please. Oh, and does anyone have a photo of a Rapture in one of those three hundred dollar cases that they could post? They sure don't show much of it on the web site but I expect it's probably perfect and worth it. I live in eastern Ma too. Nice knowing that the person who made this instrument is not too far down the road and offers some intriguing services.

It may not have the high falootin' AAA flame top but it's a beauty and I'm loving it.

To my recollection without drilling holes no. The Thunderbass bridge is larger and the thunberbolt uses the more traditional five hole bridge style where as the thunderbass uses a different format.

Sure glad to help. Of what I do remember (it has been a little while since I have had my hands on a thunderbolt) if you really wanted to change the bridge, I think a bad ass II would fit without any modification. This is just a thought if someone else can confirm this because I am not 100% on that, just a theory
