The Pedulla Club!

View attachment 2782080 MY Pedulla Thunder Bass 5 ET zebra! I also own a Thunderbolt 4 ET with Bubinga top.
Welcome to the club blmartin! Maybe you could get us a bigger picture? That little thumbnail is just big enough to tease, but not satisfy - we’re all about eye candy here! It’d be nice to see the ’Bolt, too.

I’ve been drooling over zebrawood for a while now – I think I want to trade my cocobolo Thunderbass for a zebra.

I still like working alone. Did one album on my own last year (it's in my sig). Now I'm just doing video and play bass a lot.
I gave your album a listen last week – really nice stuff.

Back 25 or so years ago, I used to habitually vist a Guitar Center very close to my home. I had in the past, played and owned 4 different fretless 70's P basses(2were stolen, 1 I got back!) and at the time had an early 80's MIJ fretless Jazz bass 4 that I went back and forth with EADG and BEAD stringing/ tunings. I was friends with the GC Mgr. and was lucky enough to unwrap and depackage the first PentaBuzz delivered to GC in south Florida when they started carrying Pedullas. Mine were the first fingerprints on that bass and I regularly played it and several others over 3-4 years but could never afford one because of super high child support payments and divorce unfortunately. I regularly was asked by the manager to buy new strings for the PentaBuzzes I put hours of playing on each week (those and Ampeg Baby Basses they had). Fast forward several years and I started playing in church and bible studies and such (much influenced by 90's CCM that featured lots of fretless playing). Still being child support poor, I stopped in a Fort Lauderdale music store to check on replacement necks because I'd rutted the fingerboard pretty bad on my and asked for neck catalogs and used to play a few fretlesses he had there including a Conklin fretless 7 that was fun. I kept checking every week on the way home from church to see if he'd gotten the catalogs and one day he says...I've got something for you, puts a case on the counter and opens it and it's a mint red cherry sunburst PentaBuzz and says here, play it... I told him thanks, but no, I can't afford a replacement Fender neck for my Jazz let alone that bass. I've got hundreds of hours playing them and they are the best. And I left. Every week checking on my catalog, he'd whip the case out and flash it saying some guy died of a heart attack and his wife brought it in. It's like new, matching Levy's strap and everything....I'll give it to you for $1700 (when GC was selling them for around $3K). I'd tell him this is great deal, but I'm saving for a MightyMite replacement neck. This went on for week after week after week. $1700, $1650, $1600, $1500, $1400.....finally he says, this is YOUR BASS, it's meant for you and I know it. Give me $1300 and I'll take your Jazz as a tradein if you want. This went on for a couple more weeks. I go in and he hands me the catalog finally and says give me $100 and I'll order it so a tell him I'll bring it next Sunday and then he can order it. Next week I bring him the $100 and he writes up a receipt for $100 deposit for Pedulla PentaBuzz. He says take as long as you need to pay it off. I said ok but I might take a year. He said ok. I found some extra work and gave him pretty much a $100 every week, I come in one Sunday and give him $100 with a $500 balance and he said take it home, pay the rest when you can. This thing needs to be played. I did and have. Paid it off. That was probably 15-16 years ago. 3 or 4 years ago I'd started wearing the the fingerboard finish prettt badly and sent it in to Michael to get it refinished and found out for another $300 or so I could change the color so I got it redone in Midnight Arctic and changed the hardware to black! I'll never sell it! I also have a Thunderbolt 6 in Peacock over Birdseye maple body. I'd love to have an MVP 5 or more so, an MVP 6! That's my only GAS!!

mtb, that is a truly touching story – thanks for sharing. That GC manager must be one awesome guy to let you take it home before it was paid for!

Wayne A. Pflughaupt

Strings: copper white tapewound (they add so much weight to your bridge pickup sound)

Pickup balance: 80-90% bridge
Bass: 20-30% louder
Treble: 10% softer
Volume: 100% :D

Used my Lehle Dual Compressor to tame the signal a bit and sent it straight into my Avalon U5. Oh, and I cut 1dB at 100Hz as well.
Forgot to ask... we’re these the light or standard gauge? If they’re the standard, did you have to modify the nut at all to accommodate the much larger G D and A strings?

I only adjusted the bridge saddles and intonation. They're the standard gauge, 60 tapewound = 45 normal, feel wise.

I feel I start missing the nickel sound sometimes though. Once I get my other fretless bass back, I might go back and string the Pentabuzz up with nickels again. The other can deliver the tapewound sound in that case.

Gotta say, I'm pretty saddend that with this many members in the club, this thread is this dead. Curious as to how many members are STILL Pedulla owners or even are on this website anymore. Sure would like to talk to more of you.
I've got both mine, my Number 1, Thunder Bass 5 Zebra and ThunderBolt 4 ET Bubinga. I've also got a US Fender Jazz and a US Lakland 4460 Classic Jazz. I've owned an early 90's MVP 4 in white and sadly traded it for one of those Warwicks back in the day. That one got away but of all my basses the Thunderbolt 4 gets the most positive feedback from engineers/sound guys and audience members. I'm never getting rid of my Pedulla's. I've played them all (Warwick, Roscoe, Modulus to name a few) but the Thunderbass body style and necks fit me. It's like they were made for me. I can close my eyes and play them up and down the board without fret buzz.

I wish he was open to using different hardware. Not pickups but bridges...I hate those Hipshot A bridges, much prefer the B model. This is purely for the sound preference, not setup issues.
From my understanding Pedulla uses AMB barrel Brass bridges in the Bolts and Raptures. I also have an 05 Thunderbass with ABM that looks similar to Hipshot. On the website I noticed both Hipshot and ABM. I'm not sure if you have a choice or not with new ones but you used to get ABM. The ABM on my Thunder is massive and heavy solid brass with the giant rollers you find on the MVP/Buzz models. Those are awesome and look bass ass. They look every bit as elegant as something you would see on a Ken Smith Neck Thru.

Not a GC. That was at a longtime Fort Lauderdale music store called Modern Music. Open for decades, closed down for good about 3 years ago. I was eye balling an amp I saw there, one of the first amps I'd ever had, he had one there in pretty good shape, an Ampeg B-25 with a 2-15 cab and had seen it there a month or two earlier and saved up a bit of cash and he had closed down a few days earlier. He was always a great guy and had neat stuff there.

I ordered a black ABM Roller for my thunderBolt 6 and he wanted to know the serial number and really didn't want me to put it on it but I finally won out and he shipped it. My argument was I want the spacing adjustability to get the C string away from the edge of the fingerboard which really wasn't that bad. I have a tendency of pulling the string down a bit when I play which I why I'll never own a MM or a Yamaha because they space them so close to the edge (G-strings on those). I just love the mass/weight and adjustability of the ABM's. I still have the old gold one I had in my PentaBuzz from when I got him to refinish it to Arctic Blue and changed all the hardware to black.

Did it change the tone or alter its punch or overall vibe in any large degree? I ask because I got push back from Christine about wanting to put on an ABM roller or Hipshot A in place of Barrel Bridge ABM. She said it would change it too much. I understand that completed but to what degree and would it necessarily be a bad change?

I really couldn't A/B it back to back but it sustains nicely and it gives me the string spacing I need. I have more issues with the old 3 knob Electronics, which I eventually will change out, most likely for some Nordstrand pickups and pre. It does eventually need to go back for a refinish so......I might do that before I swap the Electronics. It has a tealish/maybe Peacock Blue finish over Birdseye maple. The finish is pretty badly checked on the back. The front looks great.
