The Pedulla Club!

If you think about it, they have to be protective of Mike's time when it comes to service. There are a lot of Pedulla basses out there since at one point he had a whole crew of guys building and lots of contracts to fill. But now he's just one semi-retired guy. So there's a vastly disproportionate amount of potential service inquiries as all these basses start to age. It would be very easy for him to get bogged down doing service and never build another bass.

I know that whenever something negative comes up with one of these small builders there'll be an army of people coming out of the woodwork to defend them, but personally I've had excellent service experiences with Pedulla. I had some minor issues with my Pentabuzz early on and Mike was not only accommodating but visibly concerned about it. I'm sure he'd service everything if he humanly could, which is most likely why they have such a firm policy to lean on.

Ironlung, You Speak Truth! :) However.....$450 to build a ramp? HAHA Just saying.

It is, however, the most beautiful ramp I've ever seen. My dad replicated one for my Pentabuzz (luthier for more than 40 years) and said it was tough to make. And he didn't finish it like Michael did.

He did it like Michael did it, with the pieces of wood following the neck parts. But when I finished it, it turned out very black. Still need to do it again someday.

Damn the upper horn on that sucker is huge! I'm getting all excited!

Seams: is it normal to be able feel the seams that run the length of the neck? And along the length of the body, where the different pieces were glued together upon creation? She looks/plays just fine... it just seems like those slight differences in height would have been sanded out during initial production. Do you notice the joins on your Pedullas too?

Only at the curved edge of the lower bout on my Pentabuzz, and I have to feel up the bass to detect it (well, we all caress our Pedullas, don't we?)

Is it a buzz? Those are basically dipped in polyester - no seams at all, and tough to imagine the possibility of feeling a seam with the way he coats them. Generally you shouldn't be able to feel seams regardless of the model or method of finishing though. Could it be a refin?

The seam in mine is microscopic, but you can feel it if you try. I read once how sensitive the sense of touch is, wish I could remember the measure, but think that we have no trouble with the width of a single hair on a smooth surface.

If you send in a Buzz for a fretboard refin, is the poly stripped off the whole bass or just the board? I imagine just the board. Any one know how it's done? Heat? Chemicals?

He strips the whole bass, I'm 90% sure.

If you schedule a fingerboard refin, Michael will refinish just the board ($395), which is cheaper than a complete refin ($795). He's worked on 3 Buzz basses for me: 1 fingerboard just needed a good buffing, 1 got just a fingerrboard refin, & 1 was completely refinished. All his work is top-notch. I'm debating a complete refin (+ pickups & electronics update) of the 2nd one above, 'cause the scratches on the body catch on my clothes...

So fast forward to recently, and I found a Buzz that I could actually afford. It's a 1986 that someone decided they just had to strip all the finish off, including losing the headstock logo ("BUZZ" and the '86 serial number still stamped in the back of the headstock, of course). It has a Hipshot Extender key, and the previous owner had wonked up the electronics, but the shop I bought it from had replaced it with a Bart NTMB pre. I tweaked the action a bit (it had a nice set up already), installed new strings, and it sings and growls for days just like a Buzz should, even if it's not the prettiest. I've added a few vinyl stickers to it for now. At some point I may refinish it or skin it, or may splurge to get it refinished by Michael (which will add a current logo to the headstock). For now, I'm getting used to the look. And I just gigged it Saturday night for the first time, and it was amazing! Can't wait to play it live again.

Christine could tell you for sure - if you can still read thet serial # - but I'd bet yours was one that was painted, rather than flamed, & a previous owner didn't like it for some reason. It's the sound & playability that are most important, however: congratulations!

Thanks! That's what I assume as well. The serial is 12xx, and still very legible. I didn't know that they could tell me anything else about the bass - the website says that all they can tell anyone is what year it was made. Maybe I'll send an email. Even knowing what color it was originally would be very cool. And yes, the sound and playability are what matters most, and this one has it for sure. :)

What are you talking about, "not the prettiest???" I think it looks great! Certainly way different from the usual Buzz. I think Michael should offer some natural finishes for the Buzz, as he does with all his other models.

Still trying to fill in the numbers I accidentally skipped, so we’re giving you #244. Welcome to the club Inara!

I have a beautiful hexabuzz I don't plan to ever get rid of it as it was a gift. But I can really understand wanting just 4 strings sometimes. I think your bass looks really nice as is. Maybe with a black bridge and tuners it would tie it all together. Anyway welcome to the Pedulla Club!
