We used to use a click only (no band direction) for our IEM feed. I keep the click set low so that I can hear it for starting in tempo and as a reference for quieter passages without drums. When the whole band w/drums kicked in, the click would be nearly inaudible so I could take my cues from the other players.I do believe if my praise band were to implement click tracks with voice prompts like that I would respectfully resign from the role in the band.
I get it that the goal is to have everyone playing together. However I personally find the click track to be so distracting that I no longer feel like I’m making music with other musicians.
Practice with a metronome to help you develop good time is one thing - but for live performance- I want to listen & interact with my musical companions.
Earlier in the year I played with my former church’s band briefly in preparation for a July 4th parade event.
They had started dabbling with a click track & I found it to be a non-starter for me.
A good prep for playing with a click is practicing to a metronome. work on making your playing groove to a steady beat. practice playing ahead, behind and right on top of the click.
With the new WL, there is no click. Sometimes the one is different for each player in the quieter sections when we don't have a drummer. Hopefully the problem lessens as we get used to working with each other.
