The Problem with Talkbass

Enough is enough. I have been a gigging bassist for the better part of 20 years and can not get over the division of the ranks found here. If you arent a supporting member you cant ask others what your bass is worth? Come on! I know and have known dozens of excellent bassists over the years and rarely came across someone who didnt talk freely about the bass, so when did this become something to pay for? There is a ton of great advice here but I believe most if not all of it is offered free by the individuals. I believe Ill just spend the little time I have for the internet at UglybassPlayer,
They are a lot more centered on the bass and not on who has a membership to the club, jeez. the last time I checked playing bass was about music not membership. dont bother sending any rule violation messages to me I really couldnt care less and wont see em. And if this doesnt make sense to you then you probably arent guilty of anything. But if it pisses you off, well there ya go. BYE

The Rule has a fairly simple background. You need to be a supporting member in order to be able to sell your bass on Talkbass. Its about the only thing that you MUST be a supportnig member to benefit from on TB. Non-supporting memebrs started abusing the "what's it worth?" question as a backdoor way of selling their basses on TB without paying for a supporting membership. They would say, I am thinking of selling XYZ bass, could you please tell me what its worth. This would basically operate like a for sale ad. In order to prevent this abuse from continuing the Rule was put in place. Its nothing to do with class and all about stopping the abuse of perhaps the only thing on TB you need to contribute to the site for.

This site has had problems in the past with people posting a "what's it worth?" thread as a veiled "for sale" ad. It costs money to run this website and one of the ways paul generates the needed funds is making the ability to sell here a benefit of being a Supporting Member. The "what's it worth?" threads posted by people who are genuinely only interested in that fact are an unfortunate casualty. That stated, there are PLENTY of ways to find out how much a bass is worth without asking in the bass forum. Checking the for sale forum, for example.

TB doesn't have to be another Craigslist. If one wants certain privileges, then they sometimes come at a cost, and it's reasonable for TB to ask for them. As far " It's all about the music!", registered users can find tons and tons of that sentiment here, and share and enjoy freely of it.
