I agree with you, and some people need to go to college to learn their skills, but I am the type of person that is capable and prefers to learn alone. I am very intelligent (Not my ego talking), and I have processes that I created in my head that make it possible for me to effectively teach myself. I'm not saying that everyone should go my route in life, because not everyone is as capable of me or they don't apply things the way I do, but I am an exception and my way of doing things and my way of thinking is going to be different than other people that do need to go to college.

I posted early and have been eyeing this thread for a few days.:cool:
I think the discussions here have been very frank and some really valid points of view have been discussed.
It sounds like you have a plan and you aren't "locked" into the players in your current line-up. I think the equivalent test is a great idea and a VERY smart move on your part.
My suggestion of MI or some other conservatory may have been misinterpreted. MANY attendee's of such schools don't finish. It's really just a great place to hone your skills in a directed environment and have an opportunity to MEET GREAT CALIBER PLAYERS because they're concentrated in small area.
I agree that NO LEVEL of education will do anyone any good without dedication, ambition and drive. Those are ALWAYS the key to success, no matter WHAT path one takes.
So, keep up the hard work and stick to you plan!! Good luck to you :D
BTW- I hope you enjoy Norway!! They have lots of heavy music they export and you may find a perfect fit for your tastes there!!:) I hope you find IT!

That's one of the reasons I'm looking forward to going over to Norway. I really like melodic metal (IN FLAMES, CHILDREN OF BODOM). I'm not too much of a fan of the vocals that go with the guitars (except for Anders Friden of IN FLAMES, once you get a feel for the way he sings, it takes on a different dimension). I really want to go hear a lot of the club bands there and in Sweden play, and I want to jam out with some musicians over there to learn from them. (some go to college to meet these people, i go to a foreign country LOL). Sweden really is teeming with great musicians, due to their extensive education system (I wouldn't have dropped out here if our schools were as HALF as good).
I realize I have so much to learn and experience in this world (especially the world of playing live and writing songs). I have been in a professional studio, however, a couple times as a studio musician, recording some classical rock tinged with reggae for a local songwriter, Tim Jamaica. (Randy's Recording Studio, in case anyone from Madison WI is on here).
I do appreciate everyone's comments and opinions. I haven't been a familiar face on TALKBASS before, but I will be now.

Nothing is going to change your mind and I wish you the best of luck but I think that you can learn a lot from the "retards" as you call them at your old school. They have the committment to go to school everyday to earn their high school diploma. I am certain that it is ten times as hard for them to get ready for school and go to class as it was for you but I don't see them quitting. I'm sure they are more aware of what's going on than you give them credit for. They also have to suffer all of the abuse the "normal" kids give them throughout the course of the school year. A little sensitivity on your part to these kids would not kill you. You could learn more from them then getting a PhD.

Take the advice of Commander Adama with a grain of salt. I have no doubt he and his two friends are very successful without having high school degrees. They are the exception, not the rule. They were in the right place at the right time and had the presence of mind to work their butts off to achieve that success. Although, he should have probably paid more attention in his Humility class during what little time he did spend in school. Is it just coincidence that a lack of education results in ignorance? I love these people that are successful in one tiny area of life and are able to expound like experts on the entire process of living. Kind of like actors who go to Iraq believing they are geo-political geniuses and will solve the world's woes.

School provides you with an education, not a guarantee of success. What you do with the tools obtained through that education are still up to you. I would not use the United States' education system as the reason why you dropped out of high school. My opinion is that you would have dropped out of the high school in Sweden also, no matter how good it was. The measure of a good school is how advanced (more difficult) its curriculum is compared to other schools, its class size and its teachers. Good students can excel in poor schools but poor students usually don't excel in good schools. Don't make excuses for your inability to complete something that "retards" are able to do.

I don't think there is any way I can explain this to some of you I guess, but just because the slow people that have to try hard at school to make it doesn't mean that I should have stayed in school. I agree with you, TERSER, when you say that you can learn from these people, because I believe that everyone has had different experiences and it is wise to learn from them. Specifically, what I learn from them is that I should be fortunate for being more able from them, and since I am more capable, then I should do something worthy with my capabilities. However, I am not going to learn how to play my instrument, how to write songs, and how to manage a band from them (or anyone else at school).
What you are not realizing is that school was a complete waste of my ******* time. Eight hours a day of nothing but teachers "attempting" to teach the information that no one is there by choice to learn. I mean, I am all for learning as much as one can. However, high school appeals to the lowest denominator. People in the lowest denominator don't know how to live their life and won't be getting anywhere soon (especially in America, 80% of the people are in the lowest denominator, stuck in an existance pursuing such primal instincts as security and want). High school is suspossed to be specialized towards every student to prepare him or her for their future careers and occupations. Did you actually go to high school? Do you think it fufills that role?
I learn twice as much on my own with the material then from some person that is only there to get paid "lecturing" the material to twenty kids who are barely literate (and don't care that they are) who really are there because it is forced onto them. Do you think that these people have the mental power to realize their dreams and goals and actually work towards acheiving them? I will NEVER trust someone else with "educating" me or forming my worldview. The reason this country is so ******** up is because the media and the government have transformed the average people into mindless creatures that want only what the media and the government want to give them. This is how Rome fell.
Just because I am intelligent and capable doesn't mean that I have to lower my standards to fit the majority's way. Maybe someday you will learn that everyone is different and has different needs. You are telling me to be tolerant of retards, and here you are criticizing me for living life on my own terms.
Maybe the reason Commander Adama and his friends achieved their sucess is because they realized that they are more capable than most people, and that they know that they have only one life to live, that one can truly live the life that one wants to, and they decided to work towards getting what they wanted.
TERSER, do you think I am really uncapable of completing high school? Don't make excuses for your inability to complete something that "retards" are able to do.
I'll remember that when I go take three simple tests to get the same diploma I would have got by sitting there letting my mind rot for six more months. Maybe I'll put this diploma on my wall right next to my BOSCOBEL HIGH SCHOOL LETTER OF ACHIEVEMENT IN ACADEMICS.

I guess you can take a perfectly good message and waste it on some of the dumbest people (like *********). I mean, some people (like *********) either have terrible eyesight, can't really read much anyways, or are just completely incompetant. These people (like *********) should probably take off their blinders and actually look around a bit before they decide what is right and what isn't.
Society tells ******** that a high school education is required, so, therefore, that makes it required. Not to mention the ******* fact that I have pointed out several times that the HSED (which I am getting by taking three tests with no class time because I am actually smart enough to do something like that) is the exact SAME THING AS A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA! Hmmmm.... maybe that is what High School Education Diploma means. You can take reason and slap the hell out of some of these people, and they still don't even open their eyes enough to know what slapped them.
P.S. Congratulations to ******** for making a total fool of himself.
