Are funeral processions anything but a nuisance? Funerals are for the friends and family, not for the dead right? It's about honoring and remembering? So how does disrupting traffic honor the dead? If everyone drove from the funeral home to the cemetery separately would that somehow besmirch the memory of the dearly departed?

I did it once and it was ridiculous. I don't trust drivers on the road when they're not distraught over the death of a loved one.

Seriously, you go together so that everyone arrives at the same time. This prevents Uncle Joe who has never been to the city from making circles trying to look at a map pissed and confused to were he is going, and they can not start without him because he is a major part of the service. When he finally arrives everyone has been waiting for 45 minutes.
Once you do arrive at the cemetery, have you ever tried to find the burial site at a large cemetery?
It is better to just play follow the leader.
