The "real" punk bass....

If we include "Pop Punk" in this:
Mark Hoppus (Blink 182): EBMM stingray, Fender Precision, His signature bass
Cone (Sum 41): Oly White Fender Precision
Mike Dirnt (Greenday): Various Precision basses.
I know a lot of people don't consider Pop Punk to be very "Punk", but I still like it. And a lot of other people consider it "punk".

Great thread goin on here. I'll have to go with the white P bass with flats. Here's a pic of me with long time band mate Rick Rivets (original member and founder of the New York Dolls) and Eric Pouille of the French punk band Holy Curse in the studio last fall.

want to see something disgusting? k-pop boy bands. makes me wnat to puke.
they make bieber look like an mma fighter.

Anyway getting back to TRichards I'd agree Pbasses in general were and still are just solid kick ass instruments that were more available & affordable. as to why they were white i coudln't say maybe they saw a photo of someone & followed which you wouldn't expect from a punk band but then again you have tthe flannels & bondage pants.

My favorite punk bands never had boutique basses because couldn't afford them and maybe they didn't even exist at the time. Imagine the germs or bad brains, fear, black flag playing high end instruments? yea right. the only exception i can think off the top o me head is X--Billy Zoom who played/plays Gretsch--and the exploited guitarist played a les paul which has never been cheap to my knowledge, unless his was a copy. but those are guitarists. the bassist from Exploited played a white pbass.
One thing I liked growing up was that Sonic Youth always had pawn shop guitars. I know they used a million Fenders too but also a lot of kents & teiscos & obscure crap.

It's always been a bit of a mixed bag in punk in terms of pawn-shop gear vs. nicer stuff. I'm old enough to have seen and opened for Minor Threat. Lyle Preslar and Brian Baker both played Les Pauls through Marshall halfstacks on that tour--sounded amazing, but definitely not cheap!

After noting a few things, this one stands out for all. The majority of all the pictures I have or saw had one bass standing out:

Fender Precision, Olympic White, Black pickguard, white pickups.

Dee Dee, Sid, yada yada. Just a whole lot of pics of tons of bands with this particular bass. I'm guessing they were readily available and cheap back in the day, although I never owned one....

Damn, that's quite a formidable collection. :) I'm impressed. (the only thing that looks "wrong" to me is the Spector... everything else is awesome). You get great tone, my friend.

I bet that T-40 was a killer. I prefer passives to actives and the T-40 is one of the most brutal weapons/instruments I've ever had the pleasure of hearing. do you still have it?

Sounds like something Johnny would say to a reporter. But hey, I never said the thread was punk. Then again, I never said anything was or wasn't punk. In reality, I don't think I actually said anything...... :D
