The "real" punk bass....

He kind of has a point actually. The instant "punk" is good enough to become popular it is no longer "punk". I always thought it was funny that the main objective of a lot of punk bands is to sound as bad as humanly possible. Don't get me wrong, I love plenty of bands that consider themselves punk, but the "punk" scene doesn't really consider any of them punk anymore. :hmm:

i just find it laughable when people try to define what punk "is" or "isn't". :rollno:

In my punky days I used a Rick still have her in my harem too. This axe seemed to cut through the chainsaw guitars and vocals and stand out like a proud rooster on a stage. I sure had a blast doing my thing in those days. Still do it once in a while with an old buddy we just never grew up, thank god for that.

A few have used Rickenbackers for Punk:
Glen Matlock-Sex Pistols
Paul Simonon-Clash
Tony James-Generation X
Gaye Advert-Adverts
Jerry Only-Misfits
Kira Roessler-Black Flag
Mike Roche-TSOL
Brett Liles-Social Distortion
Patricia Bag-The Bags
Corey Rusk-Necros
Adam Stern-Youth Brigade
Steve Youth-7 Seconds
Wayne Maestri-F.U.'s
Buxf-Dicks
Keith Brammer-Die Kreuzen
Paul Zamost-Effigies
Mikey Offender-Offenders & D.R.I.
Josh Pappe-D.R.I.
Jeff Long-Wasted Youth
Mike Dean-C.O.C.
Joe-Cause For Alarm
Big Jay Bastard-Bastards & U.S. Roughnecks
Evo-Lower Class Brats
Dave Shield- Articles of Faith
Weirdos
YDI
Reagan Youth
Matt-Painful Discharge (I recorded our 1986 Hardcore 7"
"Skulls & Balls" w/ my Ruby 4003)

I'm sure I missed a few-

But yeah, Oly white w/ black pickguard Fender P is pretty iconic for punk-
It'd be tough for me to decide if I want a maple fretboard
(like Dee Dee)
or rosewood (like Sid)

I'd have to agree with the white Precision as punk bass of choice. In the mid 70s I played a 1971 single coil Telecaster bass in two different punk bands. One was fronted by a rabbinical student who sang with a huge safety pin stuck through his upper & lower lip. Didn't aid vocal projection, but it was punk for sure.

:D

Wow, I had no idea those bands were still playing. I like that you're rockin' the fretless Squier J in your band. When I played that Minor Threat show, I was using my first and only bass at the time, a Vox Cougar which looks almost exactly like this one:

I was playing fingerstyle too, because I hadn't learned to use a pick yet (that really threw my bandmates off!). But with an aggressive attack and a cheap Boss overdrive pedal (through my Peavey TKO 80 combo), I thought I got a sound that worked well with that band. I still have that bass, but the neck is now a ski jump.:( I'm gonna hang it on a wall at my next apartment.

Greg, that bass has a fretted P neck on it, but still.. it's great.. the looks are great.. is sounds great. I go back and fourth between fingerstyle and playing with a pick.

Depends how you define Punk. Do you mean the wanky homoerotic New York arthaus stuff like the New York Dolls and Patti Smith banging on about horses? The cartoon Phil Spector lame brain bludgeonings of The Ramones? The Clash spent a little bit too much time hanging around artschool smoking weed, Sandista?!?! The Sex Pistols were another cartoon band made up by Malcolm Mclaren to suit his closetted sexual and monetary desires.... errr.... The Buzzcocks were limp-wristed tunesmiths... The Stranglers were old men hacking away... Sham 69 were a pub rock band chancing it... The Damned were a goth band in disguise (though Rat Scabies used some sort of Violin bass back in the day). The Velvet Underground are again a blugeoning Phil Spector style band who were the play-things of Andy Warhol. Everything after 1980 is not punk but some subset of punk resulting in horrific punk pop. Ah so we must look at those obscure bands on the Nuggets compilation albums, they are punk right? Or maybe The Monks from Germany....

So... you must mean the uber principled bands of all sorts of styles on SST? Those dudes who lived in vans for ten years and made $2 a week from selling merch... Bad Brains? Sorry but they dug up roots reggae and dub influences half the time... errr....What was Mike Watt using in the Minutemen prior to the SG basses? Is that a P bass on Meat Puppets I? :help::help::help:

Basically see what "punk" bassists were using and don't do that. Don't play Ricks, the market has driven right up since Kim Gordon was uselessly hacking away at one in the 1980s (with a screwdriver probably). Don't buy those apparently no longer inferior 1970s P basses (because the market has driven those right up because in this economic climate and if you drink enough before playing them you might not notice the worse workmanship). Errrrr, even those lucite Ampeg Dan Armstrong basses are expensive. You are doomed.

I have to ask... how punk were you in 1980?

John Lydon went on to make sub-standard music that combined the worst aspects of Krautrock and Prog whilst still moaning on about how creative he was/is and how Malcolm was a tyrant. Oh and that all other bands were self-indulgent but PIL was somehow a creative hotbed and not a poorly rehearsed, poorly disciplined bunch of druggies making sub-Amon Duul II noises.

These days he flogs butter on the telly box. Nice one Johnny!

Doesn't the fact that he doesn't give a F**k what you think make him punk?

Typing "I hate everything related to punk" would have been much quicker.
