My 4003 just got home from the "spa". New strings, cleaned and polished fingerboard, polished frets, bridge adjusted, nut, truss rods tweaked and passed all other operational tests. Can't wait to take her for a ride!

hehe, thanks man. When an old friend/past band mate saw a photo of my "Backinblacker" when I finished it, he said, "that's not an axe, that's a buzzsaw!".

Here is my 4001 (NA240), signed by "Eloise", created in January 1974

I bought it third hand in 1983 from Biker Ernie. This December I finished the rest of my work on the instrument. In all, the work I did my self was: new Hipshot 'Ric' tuning machines, new saddles, sanded/primed/painted cleared coated the bridge as black gloss from the original chrome, re-soldered loose wiring, replaced the bridge pickup mount, added a 'treble bezel', new screws, added a black pickguard and dome knobs and by-pased the .047 capacitor to give the bridge pickup its full output and bass frequency capability. My biggest project on this bass was a complete electrostatic shielding job using copper tape with a conductive backing-now the pickups are 99% silent except for a little sizzle when my fingers touch the bridge pickup poles. The finale was a set of DR's 'Black Beauties'.

A few months ago I had it set up for the first time since I've owned it. The luthier didn't have to adjust it much (but had to make his own tool to do it properly), but what he did made it even better. He told me that my Ric was the "most playable Ric (bass) of this vintage that I've worked on yet."

Call it the "Backinblacker" and I love this bass even more now.

Nice! I had a 4003 all blacked out too. But, sold the bass, reverted to stock and kept all the black hardware. Hoping to pick up a 2010+ 4003 in the future and do it again.

Just picked up mine today. 2009 4003FG. This thing is beautiful, but I'm going to have to adjust the bridge pickup. I bought it second hand from a dealer, and the previous owner decided to do a modification with the pickup cover. Whatever they did left the pickup skewed to one side.

Damn, that is gorgeous. Looks like amber fireglo, or the prettiest FG I've ever seen.

Someone didn't install the Pickguardian pickup route cover correctly. There are some other good choices out there as well, with a thumb rest option.

soundwavewill's bass does have a great 'burst, but not in amber fireglo - AFGs have amber binding & fingerboards as well.

Ive been playing bass for 4 years and have owned so many basses so this is incredibly embarrassing.
Ive just figured out that you are supposed to play behind the fret and not directly on top of it...
Now I know why nearly every bass buzzed even a bit for me....
Keep that in mind as there is some buzzing and apparently it sounds a whole lot worse when you play on top of the fret...
The Hondo also needs a string retainer since the strings all float a bit out of the nut. I ordered this one today. It shouldnt look too bad.

That looks like an "assassin ric" too.
Best o' luck getting another Ric. Me, buying high end basses is out of my familyman bassplayer league theses days, and I love what I've got.

There's something to be said for taking lessons. Unless you're Jaco, you can probably pick up on some things. There's nothing to be embarressed about.
