The Rickenbacker Club Part Five

Rickenbacker made 75 each of four models to celebrate its 75th Anniversary in 2006; they made 330, 360, 660, and 4003 in Dark Cherry Metallic with specially laser-engraved pickguard and truss-rod cover. Love the color.

An almost typical 4004C Cheyenne, 'cept this one has had the pickup selector switch replaced with another volume pot to make it Vol/Vol/Tone. Mod was done by "Ric5" back in 2004. This is the lightest Rickenbacker bass.

RIC's Paul McCartney-Wings model, the 4001C64S. The "S" in this case stands for "sanded" as it emulates the rounded-off body horns and updated pickups of PM's old Rick during the Wings era. This model was made from 2002 to 2011.

Now I just have to figure out how to add pix. Let's see . . . there's that little paper clip thingie . . . maybe . . .

Well, if there is a picture here, it is a "naked Tux" -- a stripped and satin-coated 4003SPC Tuxedo. The Tuxedo was a White 4003S with a maple fretboard that was painted overall white and adorned with black hardware and plastic. As many as 125 were made. White nearly always yellowed to some degree, and I never liked that look. Give me wood grain instead.

Paul, welcome you are number 420

This is my very first Rick, once a 1972 Mapleglo, now in much better condition. The restoration is credited to Chicago-area Rick maven Ted Staberow and California's Paul Wilczynski. The "wine-burst" idea was mine. Ted suggested the added walnut headwings. Tailpiece is a new replacement as is the bridge pickup. Pickguard was PW's invention, clear with a pearly silver/white painted back. Yum!

I don't have this one in the "Forest" anymore, but it was a custom mod done by Dale Fortune for the original owner. I had it for a few years, then sold it recently. It was originally a Fireglo 4001V63, but Dale put in a genuine magnetic-shoe Horseshoe bridge pickup, shaved the neck to a slender contour, stained the fingerboard and headwings, and gave it a non-yellowing brilliant snow white finish.

Another slight modification, this Fireglo 4004L has Ric5's VVT mod, and I opened the nut to string her with BEAD tuning. The maple fingerboards on these early Laredos are beautiful. Truss rod cover was swapped out also.

This bass has made the rounds. Owned by several of the RRF crowd, it once had a broken truss rod. RIC originally had the neck pickup on the 4004 family right up against the fingerboard, and the cavity for it allowed access to the bottom end of the rods. When they redesigned them in 1999, they lowered the pickups, but that made it impossible to get to the acorn nuts on the ends of the rods. This bass was sent back to RIC who carved rounded channels into the top and refinished the bass after replacing the broken rod. After that episode, they decided to put the pickup back in original position starting in 2004.

Back to this bass. It was sold to another guy who started converting it to a five-stringer, but then he sold it to a guy who was thinking about making it an eight-string (or a 10-string!), but lost interest and sold it to me. Beautiful flame on this one. It was originally equipped with gold hardware, but that went away long ago.

Another favorite, my 4003 in Montezuma Brown, 2003/04's COY. Some Montes have a very dark, almost black, edge. This one is more like "strong iced tea" in color. I love it.

Yeah, that's a leaf over there. I was shooting with my drape taped to the garage door on a cloudy day. Ideal lighting. Where's that blower?
