This is my new '78 4001. It has been sanded down by the previus owner. It is now on its way to Pat Wilkins who will restore it to a Mapleglo finish.

Well, if there is a picture here, it is a "naked Tux" -- a stripped and satin-coated 4003SPC Tuxedo. The Tuxedo was a White 4003S with a maple fretboard that was painted overall white and adorned with black hardware and plastic. As many as 125 were made. White nearly always yellowed to some degree, and I never liked that look. Give me wood grain instead.

In case anyone doesn't yet know, Mr. Boyer is one of the most knowledgeable folks there is with regards to RIC history, among other areas of interest.
Love these newest club additions, nice stuff. And welcome Paul and the Tux, looking forward to the new book.
Well, I dunno 'bout that "history" thing, but I think I've done enough research on the Rick basses to write a book.

Here's another. This was a 4004L Laredo with chrome trim, but I swapped the hardware with another collector and now it's mostly a 4004Cii Cheyenne II in Turquoise. Only the original jackplate with its serial number is chrome. Peeking inside the control cavity revealed that the body wings are constructed with the maple/walnut/maple sandwich that is standard on the Cii, so it's even MORE like a Cii with the gold!
I had Larry Davis (Atlanta, soon to be in Florida) redo this basket-case 4001. It's a '72 that was terribly beat up, and I bought it a couple of years ago as an on-going project. I opted for the brightest version of Azureglo, and the new tailpiece is a concession to a vintage restoration.
. . . now that I've figured out the best way to attach. Here's the "naked Tux" again without having you click for enlargement:
None more black: Rickenbacker's 4003SPC "Blackstar." Like the Tuxedo, this is a 4003S with a maple fingerboard painted overall Jetglo (black). Tiny "microdot" position markers on the fingerboard were features of the SPC's. For some reason, RIC used the chromed bridge-pickup cover instead of the black one.
The other "almost all black" special was the "Shadow," supposedly made for Guitar Center stores in 1986. It's still not clear what the occasion was; 25th anniversary of GC, or 25th store in the chain . . . ? They supposedly made only 60 of this model, but that's not certain, either. Note the checker binding and large black dot position markers.
Burgundy (or Burgundyglo) was a classic color of the '70s, but it went away for a while. It was brought back briefly as the "Color of the Year" for 2002 and applied to this 4003.
Blueburst was the "Color of the Year" for 2005, and that's when I ordered this 4004Cii Cheyenne II. I waited better than three years for this, but she's a beauty. Very flamey and grainy maple on this one.
